Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the Permanent Full Time Ferry Relief Mate position with Ferry Services - Halifax Transit.

The Ferry Relief Mate is administratively responsible to the Supervisors, Ferry Operations. While working on a vessel, the Relief Mate is functionally responsible to the Ferry’s Captain for all duties of the position to which they are assigned, including measures to ensure the safety of the vessel and passengers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A Ferry Relief Mate shall:As Ferry CrewConducts duties and responsibilities for the position assigned (Mate, Engineering Watchkeeper, or Deckhand) in accordance with the Ferry Operations Manual and the published ferry scheduleMaintain cleanliness for areas assigned, shovel snow and spread urea when required to maintain safe conditions for passengers and crewAssist other Ferry Crew members as directed by the MasterOperate hydraulic ramps or overhead doors as assigned to facilitate the safe embarkation and disembarkation of ferry passengersPerform emergency duties in accordance with the Muster List for each ferryPerform security duties in accordance with the Ferry Security Plan for each ferryReports any irregularities to the Captain and the Supervisors, Ferry OperationsOther duties as requiredAs Ferry Mate:When directed by a Ferry Master, safely navigate, berth, depart and communicate in accordance with the Collision Regulations, Halifax Harbour Regulations and Marine Communications and Traffic Services Halifax directionAs Engineering Watchkeeper:Conduct flash up and shut down of the ferry as appropriateMaintain machinery and machinery space cleanlinessComplete the Engine Room Log at the end of each watch with required informationAs Deck Force:Perform maintenance work in support of a ferry or a ferry terminal pontoon arrangement (chipping, grinding, painting, cleaning, minor repairs, storing)Other duties as required by the maintenance program.QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.Experience with marine electronic equipment.Experience and demonstrated expertise with Voith-Schneider propulsion.Experience with general deck maintenance.Minimum (2) two years’ experience in a marine operation.Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
Please note: All certificates must be recognized by Transport CanadaTransport Canada Chief Mate, 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic.Current Marine Medical.Current First Aid.Restricted Operator Certificate.Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
Please Note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.
Please Note - Candidates will be required to provide proof of their valid certificates and licenses, per the educational technical qualifications, prior to being invited for an interview.

HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work are full time as required by the shift schedule.
SALARY: $77, 293, Level 1, as per ATU, Local 508 Collective Agreement.
WORK LOCATION: Halifax Transit Ferries: Alderney, Halifax and Woodside Ferry Terminals - Based on operational requirements the work location and schedule are subject to change.
