Job Summary:

In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values and Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Working within the assigned clinical program, the Perinatal Clinical Educator (PCE) is a salient member of the interdisciplinary leadership team and demonstrates a set of core competencies important to developing and maintaining the academic practice environment. Core competencies focus on education and staff development, collaboration, leadership and change management in the development and delivery of quality nursing practice. The PCE utilizes evidence-informed practice and education theory; understands and applies theories related to adult learning, group dynamics, role and organizational behavior that will support best practice and patient/family centered care. The PCE promotes lifelong learning and learner responsibility for their ongoing professional development. The PCE promotes education practices that are consistent with established policies, standards and strategic directions of BC Women’s Hospital and the PHSA.

Duties/Accountabilities:

    
1.    Responsible for education development for designated clinical programs within the Maternal Newborn and Neonatal Programs utilizing educational/curriculum theory and knowledge of specialized clinical practice to design, develop, deliver and evaluate clinical education programs for team members (in collaboration with the Program Director and interdisciplinary team members). Validates learning needs through needs assessment. Develops, coordinates and schedules education activities, identifies outcome indicators, and evaluates and revises education programs accordingly.

2.    Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and clinical practice reference documents for team members using established educational standards.  Determines a match between content and delivery method and provides feedback to all stakeholders to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.

3.    Identifies, develops and implements customized learning plans, in collaboration with the Program Managers, Program Coordinators, Senior Practice Leaders or delegate and Senior Leaders, Clinical Education to meet individual learning needs of staff supporting a nurse to achieve the desired level of competency related to knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical judgments. Provides direct clinical instruction to new and existing staff as required and facilitates learning by role modeling direct patient care skills and practices to staff in a classroom or at designated workstation, promoting skill development, observing staff while performing patient care, including documentation practices, and providing feedback to ensure care is provided according to program standards and clinical practice guidelines.

4.    Facilitates learning by coaching and acting as a clinical resource through knowledge of evidence-based, best practice and developments in technology and equipment, consulting with community experts, evaluating clinical practice systems/standards, identifying new theories/trends/education programs, developing new/revised standards and presenting educational sessions based upon specialized body of knowledge to enhance quality patient care. Helps identify and introduce innovative learning technologies.

5.    Assists Senior Practice Leaders with the introduction and initiation of new policies and procedures amongst staff. Collaborates with the Senior Practice Leader with plans for introducing new evidence-based care guidelines.

6.    Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning outcomes using program/resource evaluation, learner behaviours, utilization statistics, and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.

7.    Participates (and or leads change initiatives where education is the primary mode of change) in quality improvement and risk management activities through methods such as evaluating effect of changes in patient care practice, generating recommendations for alternative approaches, provides education to staff as a result of Patient Safety & Learning System reports, and recommending changes to selected policies, procedures or protocols; drafts new and/or revised procedures, standards and criteria for the program in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team. Initiates strategies to improve patient care using principles of continuous quality improvement to promote delivery of high quality educational services.  

8.    Monitors, evaluates, and makes recommendations regarding the purchase of equipment, supplies and staff education requirements.

9.    Participates in meetings, committees and working groups as a clinical education resource by providing input and suggestions related to education implications and group processes of new initiatives to ensure that clinical educational needs are addressed.  Documents educational process and utilization statistics by maintaining database and records, and by providing written and verbal reports to demonstrate accountability and to continuously improve the quality of clinical education services.

10.    Provides consultation to staff regarding professional development, clinical education and/or career planning by maintaining interpersonal contact and observation, providing verbal and written feedback for the individual to continue competency development, meeting with team members on a one-to-one basis and recommending educational programs/resources and facilitating development of learning and/or professional growth plans with new staff in collaboration with Senior Leaders, Clinical Education.

11.    Contributes to yearly staff performance planning and review by auditing and assessing performance during orientation, probation, skills review and education and training sessions and communicates findings to the Program Coordinator and Program Manager.

12.    Participates in students' clinical experience by, coordinating student placements and preceptor assignments in collaboration with the Program Coordinator, New Knowledge & Innovation, and other team members.

13.    Participates in approved nursing and interdisciplinary research and special projects through methods such as identifying research topics/issues, promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, supporting evidence-based nursing practice and gathering and summarizing data to improve education and clinical effectiveness.

14.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
•  Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Three (3) years of recent clinical experience in the designated specialty area including one (1) year in an educational or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Current Neonatal Resuscitation Provider status
• Current Fetal Health Surveillance certificate (Maternity)

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to coach, to foster effective teaching and learning relationships/environments, to demonstrate, facilitate, lead and provide effective clinical support and consultation.
• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, to model conflict resolution strategies, to effectively deal with conflict situations, and to use critical thinking in approach to teaching.
• Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary/ inter-professional team.
• Understanding of research process and methodology.
• Able to operate related equipment (office and designated clinical area).
• Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
