Payroll - Global Process Owner

Role Overview

A new role, the Global Process Owner (GPO) is responsible for the governance, development and enhancement of the end-to-end global Payroll process. The GPO must collaborate with process stakeholders across the organisation, to ensure effective and efficient process operations and identification and leverage of cross-process synergies. The GPO also monitors process performance and prioritises and drives process-related investment decisions and implementation. Additionally, the GPO is accountable for ensuring process compliance with all relevant legislation and company procedures.

We are seeking an experienced Global Process Owner (GPO) for Payroll to design, standardise, and govern the Payroll process. This role will focus on ensuring accurate and compliant payroll accounting, reconciliation, financial reporting, and integration with general ledger and statutory books. The GPO will work closely with several stakeholders to maintain effective controls, enable automation, and ensure payroll financial data supports business planning, regulatory and tax reporting across regions.

Role Responsibilities

Process Leadership & Strategy

Transition from existing regional Payroll model to global standardised operating structure, centralising where appropriate

Ensure we define and build a fit for purpose ‘to be’ global payroll process, ensuring local requirements are met, be they nuanced local tax reporting or approvals

Own the end-to-end global Payroll Finance process, covering journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, payroll-related provisions

Develop a comprehensive transformation roadmap for payroll accounting to drive scalability, transparency, and global compliance

Act as the global authority on payroll-related finance treatment, including compensation types such as bonuses, variable pay, benefits, and statutory obligations

Line management of a global team across time zones and jurisdictions

Standardisation & Optimisation

Establish and maintain globally consistent payroll accounting policies, GL mapping methodologies, and reconciliation practices while accommodating local requirements

Develop and roll out standardised templates for journal entries, employer tax reporting, and payroll-related accruals

Highlight upstream process dependencies so we can fix processes at source

Identify and implement opportunities for simplification, automation, and elimination of manual interventions across payroll finance tasks

Technology & Systems Enablement

Collaborate with IT, HRIS, and ERP teams such as SAP, Oracle, and Workday to ensure seamless integration between payroll systems and finance platforms

Build a business wide end-to-end process to ensure clear ownership of payroll data and a workforce model, that both reconciles to the underlying financial accounting and enables future forecasting of our largest cost base

Create, monitor and hold to account key sources of data to ensure it remains accurate and appropriate

Build on existing systems and disparate ways of working to identify the best tool for the job

Define business requirements for payroll-related finance automation, including GL feeds, reconciliation tools, audit trails, and exception management workflows

Compliance & Controls

Ensure payroll finance processes comply with internal policies, SOX/internal control frameworks, tax regulations, labor laws, and applicable financial reporting standards

Design and enforce robust internal controls over payroll accounting, including journal entry validation, error resolution, reversals, and reclassifications

Performance Management

Define and monitor KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and SLAs (Service Line Agreements) to track payroll accounting accuracy, completeness, and timeliness

Implement dashboards and reporting tools to monitor reconciliation status, manual journal counts, exception items, and close cycle metrics

Stakeholder Engagement

Partner with HR, Payroll Operations, Tax, Legal, Treasury, and local finance teams to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll accounting across all geographies

Act as the central point of contact for escalations related to payroll accounting discrepancies, late feeds, or process issues

Change Management & Training

Design and deliver global training on payroll accounting policies, journal templates, and month-end procedures

Champion adoption of new tools, systems, and controls across global and regional finance teams

Experience / Competences

Essential

Significant years of experience in finance operations, payroll accounting, or shared services in a multinational environment.

Deep knowledge of global payroll-related accounting, including employer contributions, bonuses, and equity-based compensation.

Proven experience managing or transforming payroll-finance integration processes using ERP systems (SAP, Oracle) and payroll platforms

Cross-Cultural Leadership

Must have experience in dealing with C-Suite stakeholders and demonstrable experience of working at pace

Proven experience leading global process ownership, transformation, or standardisation initiatives in a complex, international environment

Desired

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA, Qualified Accountant (ACA, CIMA, ACCA or equivalent) or professional certification (e.g., CPA) is a plus

Proficient in ERP platforms (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Workday), financial planning (OneStream) and/or automation tools (e.g., Coupa, Alteryx, Ariba, Anaplan, Power BI)

Financial & Regulatory Acumen

Lean Six Sigma certification or similar process improvement credentials
