Position Overview
The Asphalt Paving Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of asphalt paving crews, including coordination of personnel, equipment, and resources. This position will primarily perform supervisory duties, but on occasions may assist with general laborer and equipment operation tasks as needed. This position will report directly to the Construction Manager.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Be the site safety champion: ensure the safety of all crew members and the public who may interact with the job. Follow and enforce company policies and procedures with all crew personnel and subcontractors. Hire, train, and mentor new employees: participate in the 30-60-90 Training Program. Promote continuous growth of employees. Train crews as needed on methods and equipment. Work with Superintendents, Project Manager/Estimator, and Construction Manager to schedule crews effectively and efficiently based on business needs. Work with Project Manager/Estimator to develop and update project schedules. Work with Project Manager/Estimator and/or other Lines of Business to schedule projects, personnel, equipment, subcontractors, and resources. Prior to job startup, review with the Project Manager and Foreman the project plans and specifications. Participate in project handoffs and cost reviews. Assist Project Managers by providing feedback on job progress and identify changes to the scope of work and if change orders are necessary. Perform field measurements & check that job quantities & yield are correct. Check daily cost sheets for correctness, compliance with estimated cost, and if over budget, find out why and report to Project Manager. Participate as required in pre-bid and post-job meetings to evaluate performance and profitability of projects to ensure goals are attainable and met. Ensure crew timecards are turned in timely, coding is correct, equipment and labor hours are recorded accurately. Review Plans, Specs, Work Order, Contract Documents frequently to ensure compliance. Schedule and coordinate any necessary material testing. Participate in project meetings with contracting agencies and customers. Communicate with customers, inspectors, and the public in a positive & friendly manner. Visit job site locations prior to project start to create a plan for success. Interface daily with crews to ascertain their needs, problems, and job progress. Supervise and coordinate daily crew activities and review production schedules. Production performance: recommend methods to improve safety, production targets, equipment performance, product quality, and crew performance. Organize jobsite goals, timelines, and budgets. Coordinate trucks, material delivery, and traffic control. Keeps crews accountable for safety, production rates, and quality control. Assist with general laborer duties as needed, which may include shoveling, laying asphalt, and other tasks as required. Assist with heavy equipment operation, if trained, as needed at job site locations. Regular and timely attendance. Work fluctuating schedules in or out of town.
Education/Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred and 4 to 7 years of asphalt related construction experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
Qualifications & Work Requirements
Thorough knowledge of the construction industry and its means and methods. Must have previous experience with asphalt paving and grading. Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage workers. Ability to understand blueprints, contract specifications, and grades. Must be able to work independently as well as with other crew management, customers, subcontractors, and the general public. Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, EPA and CDL laws and procedures. Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply polices and safety procedures. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute yield, rate, ration, percent, land to draw, and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to work well with others in a group or one on one setting. To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately and have knowledge of Database software.
