Patient Financial Counselor- Cancer Services

Summary


As part of the OIS department process, the Patient Financial Counselor is responsible for insurance and eligibility verifications and assessment of financial requirements for cancer care services for all new patients.  Counsels the patient on insurance benefits and co-payment/co-insurance responsibilities.  Provides cost estimates to patients as needed.  Initiates the Financial Assistance process for self-pay or underinsured patients.  Refers patients to the CCC Care Coordinator as appropriate for drug assistance and/or community program assistance.  Serves as a liaison between Patient Financial Services and CCC.  Has functional knowledge of patient insurance and billing operations in oncology services. 


Position Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Working knowledge of insurance claims process and understanding of insurance policies that govern insurance plans.  Preferred Education: Associate’s degree in health information technology or nursing from an accredited college or university or equivalent on the job experience.  Specialized training in billing and coding preferred. Minimum Experience: 3 years related work experience including customer service Preferred Experience: Knowledge of insurance and billing terminology, rules and regulations.  Excellent computer skills to include Excel and Word. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent customer service skills.
