Position Summary: 

Performs a variety of duties involving the transportation of patients throughout the hospital. Collects and delivers items to and from areas including, but not exclusive of, the Laboratory, Pharmacy, CSS, Materials Management, and patient care areas. 

Major Responsibilities: 

Escorts ambulatory patients. Transports patients by wheelchair, stretcher or bed. Prior to transport, verifies identification of all patients assigned by checking for 2 identifiers and reviews the ticket to ride. Notifies RN/caregiver if discrepancy on forms.  To ensure patient comfort and safety during transport process, monitors and responds to basic patient needs before, during and after transport. Communicates with patients throughout transport event. Provides appropriate handoff communication when patient is delivered to receiving unit. Delivers stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs as needed. Disinfects transport vehicles and ancillary equipment as needed. Transports patient specimens to the Lab, Pathology, and blood products to/from the Blood Bank; soiled items to CSS. When handling soiled items and/or body fluids, applies the same infection control guidelines as used in patient transport. Delivers other materials such as medications, supplies, sterile items, and miscellaneous items/equipment as required. Checks E-cylinders (portable O2 tanks) for content; distributes/exchanges E-cylinders throughout the hospital. Interacts with EPIC Transport dispatch system via iPhone 6 (“Rover”) for job assignment and self-progression through task-to-task completion. May participate in Emergency Department triage transport assignment during mass casualty disaster situations; this includes assist in transport of trauma patients and transport of deceased victims to the morgue. May assume the role of dispatcher if trained and as directed. Cross train on Courier and Switchboard if applicable.

Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.  Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. All responsibilities are essential job functions.

License/Certification/Education: 

Required: 

Requires High School or equivalent education.

Experience/Skills: 

Required: 

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire. Ability to read, write, and understand English. Good inter-personal skills and a customer service orientation to maintain a collaborative, patient focused effort between patient transportation and other hospital departments. 

Preferred: 

Six months’ experience in a hospital environment. Unless certification, licensure, or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible Manager and Lead will review competencies with position incumbents.

Physical Demands and Enviromental Conditions  

Work is considered Medium. Position requires pushing heavy objects including patients in beds, lifting up to 25-30 lbs. and being on feet for considerable periods of time indoors in a normal patient care environment.
