As a Patient Companion, you will help facilitate this mission by providing compassionate and top-quality care. In this role, you will assist RNs, physicians, dietitians, and other staff in coordinating and fulfilling treatment plans. You will also find a culture that encourages professional growth, educational development, and career success. With this being a CCFSR role, you will cycle between Martin North, Martin South and Tradition Hospitals, allowing you to work with diverse populations across numerous units, departments and locations while learning from many of our best caregivers.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts/days from 6:00AM – 6:30PM or 6:00PM – 6:30AM. Floating between Martin North, Martin South and Tradition Hospitals will be required, as needed.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.
Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.
Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing.
Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
Follow protocols and initiate CPR and other emergency measures as required.
Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross for healthcare providers upon or within the three months of hire
Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program or equivalent experience OR currently enrolled at an accredited school of Nursing, with completion of a Nursing Fundamentals Course OR have completed hospital-based NA/PC orientation or equivalent
Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Previous experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Physical Requirements:
Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
