Indian River Hospital's Emergency Department has multi-disciplinary care teams, and the leading-edge technology needed to diagnose and treat patients effectively, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As a Patient Companion in the Emergency Department, you will participate in the delivery of patient care in an effective and efficient manner and assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients. Your work will ensure that patient care is effectively prioritized as this is a very busy ER. **A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM - 7:00PM.** A caregiver who excels in this role will: + Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients. + Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected. + Accompany and assist patients at all times, including during transport, tests, transfers and ambulation. + Collect patient specimens for laboratory testing. + Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician. + Initiate CPR and other emergency measures. + Acknowledge patient concerns/needs and notify appropriate caregivers for assistance when necessary. + Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: + High School Diploma or GED + Completion of a hospital-based patient companion training program OR equivalent experience OR enrollment at an accredited school of nursing and completion of a nursing fundamentals course or completion of a hospital-based NA/PC orientation + Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: + Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross - If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire **Physical Requirements:** + Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. + Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. + Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work. **Personal Protective Equipment:** + Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required. **Pay Range** Salaries [which may be] shown on independent job search websites reflect various market averages and do not represent information obtained directly from The Cleveland Clinic.
