**Job Title: Outside Machinist - Marine Propulsion Systems**
**Job Description**
The Outside Machinist plays a crucial role in maintaining, repairing, and enhancing ship propulsion and auxiliary systems. This includes steam, turbine, electrical, and diesel propulsion systems, rudders, steering gear, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems. The role involves installing, repairing, and maintaining ship fluid systems such as pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators, and valves. Additionally, the machinist will test equipment to ensure systems meet specifications and perform maintenance on boilers, pumps, and valves.
**Responsibilities**
+ Conduct major and specialized mechanical overhaul and repair work on gasoline and marine engines, outboard motors, and related marine equipment.
+ Establish and maintain a preventive maintenance program for marine engines and related marine research equipment.
+ Test marine engines and equipment to determine the need for repairs or adjustments.
+ Repair and maintain hydraulic equipment and valves.
+ Operate hand and power tools associated with marine engine and equipment repair.
+ Assist in the fabrication of equipment.
+ Work aboard ships on auxiliary equipment, pumps, valves, and boiler systems.
**Essential Skills**
+ Journeyman level Outside Machinist with 5+ years of experience.
+ Minimum three years of experience in a related field, or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school.
+ Experience in Navy ratings such as BT, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.
+ Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, instructions, and technical manuals.
+ Ability to comprehend hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
+ Capability to assemble and install complex mechanical systems, meeting alignment criteria.
+ Proficient in the use of precision measurement tools.
+ Understanding of both Imperial and Metric measuring systems.
+ Shop mathematic skills, including geometry, trigonometry, decimals, and fractions.
+ Ability to safely use hand, power, and portable machining tools.
**Additional Skills & Qualifications**
+ Shipyard experience after Navy service is preferred.
+ Experience with diesel engines and propulsion shafting repairs is a plus.

**Work Environment**
Work is performed at the NASSCO yard, supporting new construction ship builds. The environment includes working on various ships such as T-AO and ESB classes. Employees are expected to adhere to safety protocols and work collaboratively within a team-oriented atmosphere.
**Job Type & Location**
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, California.
**Pay and Benefits**
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $42.00/hr.
