Position Description

 

Under direction, the outreach specialist assists the supervisor in performing one or more of the following major functions: assist with community outreach and recruitment on- and off-campus services; conduct interviews and evaluations; performing personnel recruitment. Direct the work of students. May be assigned to collect, compile, classify, and report a variety of program data.

 

Responsibilities

 

This classification may be used in a variety of programs for special student populations. The Outreach Specialist performs a combination of the following duties:

 

• Establishes relationships with high school and community agency personnel for program recruitment purposes; coordinates the development and preparation of promotional materials.

• Serves as a liaison with District schools and district representatives related to College programs: Montclair-to-College, etc.

• Assists with coordinating special events such as tours, public official visits, ceremonies, special presentations and receptions.

• Develops and maintains the college outreach calendar.

• Collaborates closely with staff to coordinate the college outreach program, including coordinating meetings and communication.

• Assist in preparing marketing materials including brochures, mailings, and materials for events and activities.

• Prepares oral and written presentations to local schools, organizations and community members.

• Maintains records and department files including but not limited to: time sheets, budgets, and work requisitions.

• Assists in development of department goals, activities, and budget.

• Provide clerical assistance as needed.

• Conduct weekly meetings; conducts workshops; for student employees regarding outreach events and activities.

• Coordinates the activities of the student employees (15-20 students) including scheduling events and activities.

• Assists with the employment process including the recruitment, application, screening process and conducting interviews and performance evaluations.

• Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

• Knowledge of the objectives and methodologies of programs designed to assist educationally and economically disadvantaged persons.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, establish cooperative working relationships with staff, administrators, faculty, students, and others contacted in the course of performing assigned duties; ability to advise students regarding educational goals and to provide tutorial support.

• Ability to train and direct the work of student assistants, and peer tutors.

• Ability to keep accurate records and prepare statistical and narrative reports.

• Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of this would be an associate degree with coursework or experience in social services, and an understanding of the needs and characteristics of educationally and economically disadvantaged student populations.

• Demonstrated evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college environment.

 

MEETING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS DOES NOT ASSURE THE CANDIDATE OF AN INTERVIEW. Applications will be evaluated taking into account the breadth and depth of relevant education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree from a two-year accredited college.

• At least one year of clerical experience working in an office setting, preferably at a community college.

• Strong public speaking skills - must be able to make oral and written presentations using various tools and technology.

• Experience working with the outreach and recruitment of students.

• Ability to exercise initiative, discretion, and judgment in working independently and to supervise assigned staff.

• Evidence of ability to work with computers, multimedia and other technologies.

• Knowledge of college admissions requirements and matriculation processes.

• Bilingual.

 

Additional Information

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Local and regional travel may be required for recruitment and community relations activities.

• Working hours: Monday-Friday: 7:30am - 4:30pm. Hours may vary according to assignment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, 12-month, classified bargaining unit position. Starting date: as soon as possible. Range 13 of the CSEA Salary Schedule, with a starting salary of Step A, $4,592. Excellent benefit package.

 

Being able and ready to work in-person with Chaffey students, Chaffey employees, or other members of the Chaffey community/Chaffey partners/Chaffey contractors is an essential function of this job.
