Orientation & Mobility Specialist
Job Description Overview: This role supports visually impaired students across the county by providing instruction on how to navigate their environments safely and independently. The specialist will work closely with teachers of the visually impaired and other educators to develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs). Day to Day: - Conduct evaluations and functional visual assessments - Assist in IEP development and goal setting - Collaborate with special educators, case managers, and general education teachers - Provide individualized instruction to visually impaired students on safe, confident, and independent travel in various environments. - Conduct functional vision assessments and contribute to IEP development and goal setting. - Collaborate with teachers, families, and specialists to adapt environments and reinforce mobility skills. - Use specialized tools (e.g., tactile maps, long canes, optical devices, GPS) to teach orientation and mobility techniques. - Transport students to community settings for real-world mobility training, ensuring safety while fostering independence. - Track student progress through data collection, progress notes, and quarterly reports. - Lead in-service training for educators and families on best practices for supporting visually impaired students. - Teach foundational mobility concepts including spatial awareness, sensory training, map skills, public transportation use, and independent living skills.
