Organ Procurement Coordinator

Major Responsibilities:Evaluates organ referrals in collaboration with the Medical Director. Evaluates potential donor's organ function with the organ procurement organization. Recommends necessary consultations/testing as needed for organ evaluation.Coordinates the donor/transplant recovery process with the donor hospital and local organ procurement organization.Recommends appropriate interventions to achieve optimal organ function through adequate donor management consulting with the thoracic and abdominal transplant surgeons.Arranges transportation for the recovery team and the transport of a recovered organ. Accompanies the transplant team on organ recoveries if needed.Ensures all medical and legal requirements are met prior to recovery of organ(s).Responsible for facilitating communication between the recovery and transplant team staff.Acts as a resource to donor hospitals representatives and staff in the donation and transplantation process by maintaining ongoing communication.May participate in the organ procurement preservation process.Performs data collection and data entry relating to transplant recipients and donors. Maintains waitlist for transplant recipients documenting status changes and removals. Facilitates communication between transplant recipients and donor families.Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices, or Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) certification issued by the American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC) needs to be obtained within 2 years.
Education Required:Associate's Degree in Nursing, or Master's Degree in Biomedical Science.
Experience Required:Typically requires 1 year of experience in surgical services nursing or organ donation services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills and a professional demeanor necessary.Must be assertive and self-motivated.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Must be able to sit, stand and walk for up to 80% of each workday. Must be able to:lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.Must be able to:push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.Will be exposed to blood and other bodily fluids thus, protective clothing (gloves, goggles, etc.) must be worn.Position may require travel. May be exposed to road and weather hazards. Must operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
