The Role
This position is responsible for operating electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives; interpreting train orders, signals, and rules and regulations; transporting freight; and the timely and correct switching and placement of rail cars.
Pay Rate
Starting at $28.87 per hour
Responsibilities
Inspect locomotives before operation
Operate throttle and airbrakes to move locomotive
Interpret train orders, signals, and rules to ensure safe movement
Observe tracks for obstructions
Prepare reports on delays, accidents, or other issues
Lubricate locomotive parts
Operate switches, derails, gates, and related equipment
Use radio, hand, and lantern signals to control movement
Apply and release hand brakes; couple/uncouple rail cars; handle hoses and chocks
Wear required PPE at all times
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma (or equivalent) preferred
Military experience helpful
Skills and Abilities
Dependable with reliable transportation
Strong verbal and written communication; active listening skills
Ability to prioritize and manage tasks efficiently
Works well in a team environment and under pressure
Follows direction from all levels of management
Physical Requirements
Frequent walking and standing; occasional climbing, crawling, crouching, or kneeling
Must be able to lift and move heavy items as required
Requires vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment
Work Environment
Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
Regular exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals
