**Engineering Intern – Manufacturing Automation**
**Location:** Clarksville, TN
**What’s in it for you**
At Trane Technologies, you’ll join a collaborative manufacturing engineering team and gain hands-on experience with real production equipment in a fast-paced industrial environment. This internship is designed for someone at the beginning of their engineering career who wants to build practical skills in **Allen-Bradley PLCs, industrial networking, and Inductive Automation Ignition** .
You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians to support automation projects, troubleshoot equipment issues, and contribute to improvements in manufacturing processes. This is an excellent opportunity to apply classroom learning in a plant setting, strengthen your technical skills, and build experience with technologies used in modern manufacturing.
**What you will do**
+ Assist with developing, testing, and improving control logic for manufacturing equipment and automation systems
+ Support troubleshooting of **Allen-Bradley PLCs** , HMIs, sensors, and other industrial control devices
+ Help connect and validate communication between PLCs, networked devices, and plant systems
+ Assist with basic **Ignition** development tasks, including tag setup, screen updates, and data visibility improvements
+ Support industrial networking activities such as device configuration, connectivity checks, and communication troubleshooting
+ Work with engineers to identify and resolve hardware, software, and communication issues on manufacturing equipment
+ Document programming changes, test results, and troubleshooting steps for automation projects
+ Participate in continuous improvement efforts that improve equipment reliability, process efficiency, and operational visibility
**What you will bring**
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Currently pursuing or have completed an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in **Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering** , or a related technical field
+ Basic understanding of **PLCs, controls, or industrial automation**
+ Exposure to **Allen-Bradley PLCs** or ladder logic through coursework, labs, student projects, or internship experience
+ Basic understanding of **industrial or computer networking** , including IP addressing, Ethernet communications, and device connectivity
+ Strong troubleshooting skills and willingness to learn in a hands-on manufacturing environment
+ Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with engineers, technicians, and operations teams
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Exposure to **Inductive Automation Ignition** , SCADA, or HMI development through coursework, projects, or prior experience
+ Familiarity with **Allen-Bradley Studio 5000** , FactoryTalk, or similar industrial automation software
+ Basic knowledge of industrial communication concepts such as **EtherNet/IP, Modbus, TCP/IP, RS232, or RS485**
+ Experience with sensors, actuators, relays, and other control system components
+ Exposure to manufacturing, maintenance, controls, or automation-related projects
+ Experience with technical documentation, data collection, and basic analysis
+ Familiarity with programming or scripting tools such as **Python** is a plus
