The APP promotes high-quality imaging and patient-centered care consistent with enterprise standards and guidelines.
Clinical Decision-Making and Imaging Protocols

· Review prior imaging to identify potential safety issues such as unknown implants, devices, or foreign bodies that may contraindicate MRI.
· Collaborate with radiologists on complex cases or when additional imaging input is needed.
Contrast Management and Safety
· Identify contrast allergies and modify orders accordingly, choosing to perform MRI without contrast or with an alternative contrast agent when clinically indicated.
· Assess, diagnose, and intervene in cases of potential or actual contrast reactions occurring during or after administration, following Mayo Enterprise Contrast and
Medication Subcommittee guidelines.
· Treat allergic or adverse reactions promptly and appropriately.
· Evaluate the need for premedication in patients with prior contrast reactions or other safety concerns.
Patient Care and Education
· Discuss risks and benefits of MRI and/or contrast administration with patients, including those who are pregnant or have devices/implants.
· Obtain informed consent when required (e.g., for MRI with implanted devices or foreign bodies).
· Advise and order sedation when appropriate; assess for allergies or contraindications, and discuss related concerns with patients.
· Perform minor procedures such as shunt adjustments, staple removal, and suture removal as needed.
· Respond to rapid response and code blue situations as part of the care team.
Collaboration and Communication
· Serve as a clinical resource and consultant to technologists, nurses, scheduling staff, and other departments regarding patient care, MRI appropriateness, and imaging protocols.
· Address scheduling discrepancies or missing orders by reviewing provider notes, contacting ordering providers, and recommending additional or alternative exams when indicated.
· Communicate effectively with radiologists and other team members to ensure seamless coordination of care.
Operational Support
· Assist in optimizing departmental workflows and patient throughput by expediting appointments and resolving scheduling or order-related issues.
