Our Medical/Surgical/Pediatric Unit at **UPMC Northwest** is where compassionate care meets vibrant clinical expertise. Our talented teams create a welcoming environment where patients of all ages receive attentive, family-centered care.
**Patient Profile in Our Unit**
+ **Post-operative care:** Approximately **60%** of our patients—recovering from surgeries with close monitoring and tailored rehabilitation.
+ **General medical and surgical:** Around **30%** receive treatment for a variety of adult medical-surgical needs—ranging from chronic condition management to complex diagnostics.
+ **Pediatric care:** The remaining **10%** are infants to teens cared for by dedicated pediatric hospitalists who’re skilled in treating conditions like asthma, dehydration, surgical recovery, and more

**Responsibilities:**
+ Demonstrates critical thinking to address clinical, social, and emotional patient needs.
+ Provides clear, detailed guidance to patients and families for care transitions.
+ Applies adult learning principles to educate patients, families, students, and staff.
+ Creates a caring and compassionate patient experience by building healing relationships.
+ Maintains clear and comprehensive documentation to enhance team communication.
+ Promotes a culture of respect and inclusivity, holding peers accountable for healthy relationships.
+ Supports new staff and students, serving as a mentor or preceptor when needed.
+ Creates an environment of continuous learning by seeking feedback and improving practice.
+ Actively engages in shared governance, goal setting, and quality improvement initiatives.
+ Uses research and evidence-based practices to enhance patient care and outcomes.
+ Adapts to change with flexibility, supporting transitions to improve care and the work environment
+ RN license (or Temporary Practice Permit) in the facility’s state or an NLC multistate license.
+ CPR certification (AHA-compliant) within 30 days of hire.
+ PALS certification within one year of hire or transfer.
+ Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
+ Physical ability for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.
