Job Summary
This position is for an entry level Civil/Structural Engineer for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC working in the Design Engineering department. Our department is responsible for the preparation and development of engineering solutions that include risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization. Employees at this level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Selected candidate is expected to develop new and existing skills and to work with greater independence as time progresses. They have knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts and theories and exhibit sound technical judgment. They will develop engineering specific solutions in support of design change packages for power plant equipment upgrade and design projects, including but not limited to, designing and evaluating component mounting, pipe supports, whip restraints, seismic ruggedness, heat exchanger and pump foundations, reinforced concrete analysis, and other civil/structural related issues. Individual will prepare Engineering Change (EC) packages, calculations, specifications, procedures, and other technical documents. Will also perform independent reviews of engineering products prepared by their peers. Individual will be required to obtain qualifications as a Modification Engineer, Calculation Preparer, and Design Verifier prior to working independently. Selected candidate will act as the lead technical stakeholder and/or responsible engineer for various assigned projects as a member of a larger project team.
Responsibilities
+ Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
+ Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches to resolve technical problems.
+ Assist in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
+ Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.
+ Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
+ Support company goals and represent company positively and professionally.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
Nuclear Engineer I
+ Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
+ A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
+ 0-2 years of engineering experience
Nuclear Engineer II
+ Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
+ A Master 's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
+ 2-4 years of engineering experience
Desired Qualifications
+ Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program
+ Background in reinforced concrete design, pipe support evaluations, and/or seismic analysis of components and structures
+ Understanding of engineering theories and principles
+ Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
+ Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds in a team environment
+ Experience in the utility industry
+ Good written and oral communication skills
+ Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and desire to complete PE license
Specific Requirements
+ Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
+ In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified
+ Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access
+ Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support the station emergently
+ This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty
+ Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed
+ Occasional overnight travel
Working Conditions
+ Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation
