Tien, Progressive Care Unit RN and Clinical Nurse Coordinator at HCA Healthcare As a Progressive Care Unit nurse, you’ll be able to witness a patient’s positive and steady progression, enjoy interaction with patients, while still delivering true critical care. You be trained to handle advanced medical equipment, but your patients will not necessarily require the life-sustaining equipment and support to the extent of intensive care units. Nurse-to-patient ratios on PCU are slightly higher than on intensive care units, and the same – and oftentimes lower – than emergency department ratios. You’ll have autonomy to make medical decisions rapidly under standard protocols, similar to the ICU.
