Responsibilities

The Neurodiagnostic Technologist I works in the neurodiagnostic laboratories performing any one or more of the following procedures: Evoked Potentials (EP), Autonomic Reflex Screen (ARS), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS),  Neuromuscular Ultrasound, and Tremor Studies. The technologist is responsible for complete and accurate patient preparation, data acquisition, providing a safe testing environment and must demonstrate competent skills and knowledge in one or more of these areas. 

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS: Must achieve a National Registry certification in at least one of the neurodiagnostic procedures relative to the needs of the department within 2 years of hire.

Performs electrodiagnostic testing with nerve conduction studies in Mayo Clinic and Mayo Hospital. Testing includes routine and advanced studies performed on patients with common and uncommon nerve and muscle conditions. Works directly with a team of technologists and physicians in the EMG laboratory to provide high quality care. Opportunities for learning and performing additional neurophysiology testing techniques, including evoked potentials (somatosensory, visual, brainstem), tremor studies, and autonomic testing.

Examples of Duties:

Review patient’s electronic medical record for orders and special needs.Educate and prepare the patient for the test. Take an appropriate patient history geared towards patient’s symptoms to identify nerves for testing.Perform NCS with high technical acuity adhering to Mayo’s protocols efficiently and compassionately.Perform critical thinking during NCS to ensure each patient receives a thorough and customized test for their specific symptoms and physiology.Recognize and troubleshoot physiologic and non-physiological artifact and technical issues.Attend and participate in lab meetings for team sharing and discussion regarding interesting case studies, educational topics, and lab updates. 

Qualifications

Education
High School diploma or equivalent, or Associates degree or higher, or an accredited school of END Technology. Must have working knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

Experience
One or more years in Neurodiagnostic procedure testing (this includes clinical experience while attending formal END education).


License/Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS)

Additional Qualifications
Good human relation and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients of all ages and explain tests and provide a relaxing environment. Must be able to stand over 50% of the time, bending and kneeling routinely. Must be able to work with the arms above shoulder level. Must be able to lift more than 25 pounds. Must exercise proper caution to avoid potential exposure to: Chemical vapors – Heavy Metals – Ionizing Radiation – Laser – Microwaves – Infection Hazard – Skin contact with Chemicals, etc. Must work with Immunosuppressed patients.
