General Summary
Performs EEG or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) in the Neurodiagnostic lab according to established standards and practices at an entry to intermediate skills level. This includes EEG procedures in the NICU and all ICUs, and all NCS studies currently performed in the Neurodiagnostic Lab. Provides findings, results, and a descriptive analysis according to facility policy and procedures.
Essential Functions:
Related to EEG: Performs EEG procedures according to facility policy and procedures. Related to EEG: Maintains patient safety during clinically significant events, and other related duties. Related to EEG: Performs EEG procedures under direct technical supervision until all required institution competencies have been achieved. Continues to learn and apply basic and intermediate EEG waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, contraindications for activation procedures, instrumentation and preparation for use. Related to EEG: Ensures electrode application in adherence with the International 10-20 System. Is knowledgeable in correct EEG performance and recognition of clinically significant events and follows facility policy and procedures regarding critical test results. Performs patient assessment as related to care such as electrode fixation product allergies, movement restrictions, and cognitive function. Knows and recognizes drug and physiological status effects on activity monitored. Related to NCS: Performs the nerve conduction study (NCS), including test set-up, electrode application, maintaining patient safety during clinically significant events, and performs other related duties. Related to NCS: Trains under direct technical supervision until all required institution competencies have been achieved. Related to NCS: Will not perform electromyography (EMG), but may assist the physician with EMG procedures. Related to NCS: Recognizes clinically significant events and follows facility policy and procedures regarding critical test results. Maintains the patient's safety through communication to other patient care support staff during the NCS procedures. Applies basic and intermediate NCS waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, contraindications for NCS procedures, equipment instrumentation and preparation. Performs patient assessment and education as related to care such as potential allergies, movement restrictions, and cognitive function. Related to EEG and NCS: Communicates appropriately and effectively with the patient and healthcare staff to convey the purpose of the test and answers questions regarding the procedure. Understands why and how to maintain correct electrode connections. Identifies and performs basic and intermediate technical troubleshooting and artifact identification and elimination. Understands and follows concepts of digital equipment and electrical safety within the EEG/EMG/NCS unit. Has knowledge of alternate montages, NCS set-ups, protocols, and alternate equipment settings and their effects. Related to EEG and NCS: Is familiar with the facility policy and procedures for completion of the technical EEG/NCS report, charging procedures, and logging the patient into files. Contacts supervisory staff as appropriate for problems within the EEG/EMG/NCS unit. Stocks supplies and prepares patient rooms for EEG/NCS procedures. Performs any other related duties that are consistent with patient and technical care for this level.Common Expectations:
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s). Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Participates in educational programs and inservice meetings. Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record and obtains additional information if necessary. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.Qualifications
