HOW A NETWORK ENGINEER ADVISOR WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:
An IT Manager who oversees the day-to-day administration of multiple networks is responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, security, and support of the organization's network infrastructure.
This role combines technical leadership, operational oversight, and team coordination. Here's a detailed breakdown of the team’s responsibilities:
Cisco Network Infrastructure Management
Oversee day-to-day operations of Cisco routers, switches (Catalyst, Nexus), and firewalls (ASA, Firepower).
Ensure high availability and performance across LAN, WAN, and data center networks supporting mission systems.
Lead the deployment and maintenance of segmented and policy-driven Zero Trust networks.
Configuration and Change Management
Monitor and maintain core Cisco infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless).
Ensure high availability and performance of LAN, WAN, WLAN, and VPN services.
Respond to and resolve network outages, slowdowns, or performance bottlenecks
Security & Access Control
Implement and maintain 802.1X, Cisco ISE, AAA, and TACACS+ for identity-based network access.
Enforce micro segmentation policies using Cisco TrustSec or SD-Access.
Coordinate application of DISA STIGs, IAVAs, and hardening baselines on Cisco platforms.
Ensure firewall policies, intrusion prevention (IPS), and access controls are correctly configured.
Routing & Segmentation
Manage routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP) to support segmented, multi-tenant, or mission-partitioned environments.
Oversee VRFs, ACLs, QoS, and VLAN assignments in line with Zero Trust policy enforcement.
Monitoring, Troubleshooting, and Performance Tuning
Use tools like SolarWinds, Cisco DNA Center, Secure Network Analytics (Stealthwatch), and NetFlow for proactive monitoring.
Lead incident response for network outages or security anomalies; coordinate with Blue Team or SOC as needed.
Analyze logs and SNMP traps to identify trends or potential failures.
Track link utilization, device CPU/memory usage, and end-to-end latency.
Operational and Administrative Responsibilities
Team Management and Coordination
Supervise network engineers and administrators; assign daily tasks and troubleshooting tickets.
Conduct technical reviews and mentoring to ensure adherence to best practices.
Incident and Problem Management
Serve as escalation point for critical issues and root cause analysis.
Coordinate with vendors or Cisco TAC for complex technical support.
Documentation and Compliance
Maintain up-to-date network diagrams, inventory records, and configuration baselines.
Ensure systems comply with internal policies and external frameworks (e.g., RMF, NIST 800-53, CMMC).
Capacity and Lifecycle Planning
Plan for network growth, equipment replacement, and software refresh cycles.
Coordinate procurement of licenses, hardware, and support contracts.
Strategic and Cross-Functional Responsibilities
Stakeholder Communication
Provide status updates to leadership on network health and ongoing projects.
Translate technical issues into business language for non-technical stakeholders.
Project Support and Integration
Support infrastructure needs for new applications, services, or sites (e.g., remote office deployments).
Oversee network design for mergers, cloud transitions, or Zero Trust implementations.
Policy Enforcement
Ensure adherence to acceptable use policies, segmentation rules, and data protection guidelines.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
Required Certifications: Must possess at least TWO of the following:
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Enterprise
Adherence to DoD 8140 or 8570 certification, such as CompTIA Security+.
Required Experience: 8+ years of related experience
