Job Profile Name: Network Engineer, Intermediate Job Code: JP3_17950 Job Family Group: Information Technology FLSA Status: Exempt Job Family: Network Services Career Level: P2 Created/Revision Date: 8/1/2017, 6/17/2021 Grade: i105 CORE JOB SUMMARY The Network Engineer, Intermediate leads the planning and implementation of new telecommunications infrastructure projects, including site evaluation, design, and construction. Additionally, they oversee the development, installation, and maintenance of the Universities underground communication networks. The incumbent maintains accurate records of underground infrastructure specifications, installation details, and maintenance activities. An employee in this position installs and manages network communication equipment according to written and graphic specifications. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Design and implement underground telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optics and cable systems, to enhance network reliability and capacity. Supervise and coordinate the excavation and trenching processes required for the installation of underground cables and equipment. Coordinates implementation and testing of changes to the network hardware, circuits, and software. Manage the procurement and installation of telecommunications equipment, ensuring projects meet specified technical requirements and budgets. Keep abreast of new technologies and methods in underground telecommunications to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Oversee construction processes to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local codes and regulations. Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to develop and refine infrastructure designs that meet both current and future IT and telecommunications needs. Utilizes test equipment and network management components in the analysis and correction of technical problems. Maintain detailed project documentation, including construction progress reports, financial records, and compliance certificates. Identifies and diagnoses moderately complex problems and factors affecting network performance. Alerts supervisor or more experienced technicians of service degradation and performs corrective action. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. CORE QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or a minimum of five years of experience as an alternative to the degree requirement. Certification and Licensing: Not Applicable Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: + Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. + Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. + Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions. DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM Department Specific Functions Individual must maintain detailed project documentation, including construction progress reports, financial records, and compliance certificates. Must adhere to all safety practices when on a construction job-site including safety shoes and hard hat. Must be available for onsite-or remote consultation in the event of a situation involving an underground event impacting service at the enterprise. In-depth knowledge of telecommunications systems, including fiber optics, wireless communication, VoIP, and data networks. Strong leadership abilities to lead and motivate project teams. Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively negotiating with stakeholders, managing customer expectations, and communicating technical information to non-technical audiences. Experience in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating project risks. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle project setbacks and obstacles effectively.
