BACKGROUND
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is at work in over 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities helping people to survive, reclaim control of their future and strengthen their communities. The IRC’s locally-funded office in Atlanta opened in 1979 and creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to integrate and thrive in Georgia communities. Since our opening in 1979, the IRC in Atlanta has welcomed more than 30,000 refugees from 67 different countries to rebuild their lives in Georgia communities.

Join the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Atlanta as an NDMV AmeriCorps Healthcare Associate, gaining hands-on experience in public health, community outreach, and refugee services. This position offers a unique educational opportunity to develop skills in healthcare navigation, health education, and client advocacy while supporting newly arrived refugees and immigrants in accessing essential medical services.
Key Learning Objectives & Responsibilities:
Community Engagement & Orientation: Learn to introduce IRC Atlanta’s health-related services to newly arrived clients during Cultural Orientation sessions.
Healthcare Navigation: Gain experience teaching clients how to schedule medical appointments, access local healthcare providers, utilize medical transportation services, and actively participate in their healthcare.
Client Support & Case Management: Work alongside the health team to identify and track high-alert clients who require urgent medical attention, ensuring they receive culturally appropriate services.
Health Education Development: Research, design, and implement culturally relevant health education materials to empower clients in managing their healthcare.
Transportation Coordination: Develop skills in logistics by utilizing IRC’s Uber account to coordinate transportation for client medical appointments.
Data Management & Monitoring: Assist in developing and implementing a high-alert tracking system for client primary care and specialist appointments.
Interdepartmental Collaboration: Build professional communication skills by maintaining open and effective collaboration across IRC programs.
Team Participation: Engage in team-building and learning experiences by actively participating in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
Qualifications
+ Fluent spoken and written English; additional languages spoken a plus
+ Background in public health, nursing or social work, a plus
+ Demonstrated ability to take initiative, attentive-to-detail and work independently
+ Demonstrated experience working in a cross-cultural environment with vulnerable populations Proficiency in Microsoft
+ Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook
+ Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with current insurance a plus
