The Role
The role of a Senior Aerodynamics Test Engineer is critical in the high-stakes world of motorsports. This position encompasses a wide range of dynamic responsibilities, including close collaboration with GM’s key partner teams to optimize vehicle performance and the cultivation of strong relationships within the broader racing community. You will play a central role in physical testing, applying innovative and strategic methodologies during wind tunnel evaluations. Success in this role requires a deep understanding of aerodynamic principles and testing techniques, a passion for motorsports, and a strong commitment to teamwork and continuous innovation. The selected candidate will join a dedicated, high-performing team at the forefront of automotive engineering, contributing to the legacy and ongoing success of GM’s racing programs.
What You’ll Do
Work closely with other aerodynamics engineers, design engineers, and race team staff to improve the performance of the complete racecar, ensuring our wind tunnel tests are ran to the highest standards of efficiency and innovation
Provide direction and actionable data to GM race teams to improve weekend performance
Support full car and subsystem models for use in detailed aerodynamic tests
Provide critical input with planning, preparation and execution of wind tunnel tests

Additional Job DescriptionWhat You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a closely related subject with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics
5 or more years of experience in the automotive motorsports industry
Proficiency with engineering tools including 3D CAD software, CAE methods and analysis of experimental Data
Solid understanding of best practices in experimental aerodynamics
Basic proficiency in scripting and programming languages
Hands-on experience with data acquisition systems, including data collection and processing
Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with a talent for organization, collaboration, and communication
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
High attention to detail and strong organizational capabilities
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting and contribute to shared goals

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Masters or PhD in mechanical, aerospace/aeronautical engineering, or closely related subject
7 or more years of Motorsports wind tunnel testing experience, measurement techniques and data systems
Knowledge of motorsports race series regulations
Working knowledge of CAD design software (Siemens NX preferred)
Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and LMDh race vehicles
