What You'll Do

The Minneapolis Business Management Director (BMD) functions as the lead business manager for the Minneapolis office and serves as the \"right hand\" to the Office Leader.

 

Through leadership of the staffing function, the BMD is responsible for optimizing the deployment of BCG consulting resources to meet the business needs of the offices, system and region, while ensuring that each BCG consulting staff member in the office receives the right set of development opportunities throughout their career.

 

Together with the OL, the Great Lakes System Lead, and Managing Director and Partners in the office, the BMD manages the full employment life cycle of each member of the BCG non-MDP consulting team. In addition to staffing, these activities include oversight and administration of the professional development processes (career development, career path, training, transition, Teaming etc.), affiliation/retention programs, recruiting, pyramid management, and the execution of other programs related to the career and development of the BCG Consulting Team. The BMD helps to ensure that the office has the right number of people with the appropriate and relevant skills required to meet the current and future needs of our business. All of the above will be performed in concert with priorities and objectives of all business units (X, PLA, TDA) directly affiliated with the offices, with a commitment to a “One BCG” mindset.

 

As the most senior member of the Business Services Team (BST) in the office, the BMD is also expected to produce a smooth, day-to-day operation focused on service, excellence and business acumen, and to build and reinforce a positive, close-knit office culture for all located in Minneapolis. The BMD is responsible for the general management of the office.

 

The BMD functions, in the broadest sense of the word, as a leader in BCG – in the office, the system and the region. The BMD will provide leverage and support to the OL and Managing Director and Partner group in running the office. The BMD will coordinate and work in concert with counterparts from other offices in the Great Lakes System and the NAMR region. As a member of the NABLT (North America Business Leadership Team), the BMD will work closely with a wide range of constituents to pilot new programs, drive regional change efforts, coordinate initiatives, and to develop, implement, execute and interpret programs and policies related to all local staff.

 

The individual will report directly to the Minneapolis Office Leader and will have responsibility for championing a OneBCG culture for the 120 members of the Minneapolis office.

 

Please note: The duties listed below may be modified based on the experience, expertise, and capacity of the specific candidate identified for the role.

 

 

The individual in this role will be responsible for coordination across and participation in activities related to the development, mentorship, recruitment and retention of the BCG non-MDP Consulting Team in Minneapolis, as well assuring affiliation across the various business units within the offices. Responsibilities include:

 

1. Manage professional development of all BCG consulting staff

Oversee the Career Development processes for BCG core consulting staffMaintain and develop mentorship relationships and programsSupport career transition, transfer and mobility and other programsManage BCG core consulting staff compensation processes in line with regional policies · Ensure the effective recruiting of BCG consulting staff at all levelsProvide leadership for other people-related initiatives and projects as needed

2. Operate as the primary point person for issues of morale, retention, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and affiliation

Serve on the office Culture Steering Committee, which is charged with fostering and nurturing the Minneapolis office’s closeknit, open, supportive environmentRegularly take the pulse on people issues, bringing issues of importance to the OL’s and Managing Directors & Partners’ attention. Recommend changes where warranted and implement programs to ensure continuous improvementMonitor Teaming reports, drive PEOPLE survey and pulse check related initiatives and help to facilitate case team best practicesEnsure effective Teaming@BCG executionWork with the Office Experience team to set agenda for Minneapolis office events to foster an environment of collegiality and cohesiveness. Oversee coordination of all office events from small frequent gatherings (e.g., office lunches) to larger multi-day office wide events (annual retreats and team building events, holiday parties, etc.)Provide thought leadership on developing and implementing initiatives to address people issues

 

3. Plan for and manage core consulting pyramid to support the business objectives of the office, system and region

Together with the Great Lakes System Finance team, accurately forecast staff needs for the businessEnsure office growth strategy appropriately incorporates pyramid estimates and considerations

 

4. Lead staffing process for the office in concert with counterparts across the system and region

Manage the Minneapolis Talent Manager (1 direct report) and collaborate with other Great Lakes BMLs on system talent management and staffing operations, ensuring strong deployment of all core consulting staff in line with business needs and optimal client service, as well as development of our staffDirectly staff Minneapolis Project Leaders, Principals, and Partners and provide thought partnership on platform-building and career developmentProvide insight to the OL and MDPs on the state of the business and evolving trends through the lens of staffingEnsure staffing is closely linked to the Career Development processes and is steeped in BCG’s cultural values of openness, transparency, and balance

 

5. Lead the office-based Business Services Team (BST)

Build a highly effective team by fostering teamwork (within work groups, across functions, and throughout the system and region); develop a strong BST management team; coach direct reports; supervise the coaching of indirect reportsWork closely with regional teams to recruit, hire, train and oversee local BSTManage Minneapolis BST career development. Administer and ensure consistency, fairness and equity in the performance management and promotion process for BST. Provide performance improvement feedback and planning in line with regional processes and policies. Support termination of staff as necessaryEnsure appropriate learning and development for BST staff through partnership with the regional L&D team · Manage local BST compensation processes, reporting, and communication in concert with regional team

 

6. Oversee operational infrastructure for the office including management or coordination of support services, (e.g. administrative support, office services, IT, HR, real estate, etc.) working with partners from regional or global functional teams as needed

Ensure the efficient and highly effective operations in the offices through the management of the local Office Experience Team, partnering with regional/global function leaders

Coordinate delivery of support services for Minneapolis including office services & events, administrative support, IT, HR, real estate, etc. in conjunction with regional/global function leadership

Oversee the provision of a reliable and appropriate technology infrastructure, working closely with global functions

Support firm-wide, regional and office-specific Human Resources activities and policies

Ensure compliance with relevant policies, guidelines and legal and regulatory requirements; administer global, regional, and office-specific human resources policies

Manage vendor relationships and agreements as required for effective office operations with close coordination with procurement and function

Support development of real estate strategy and facilities management for the office

Work with OL, system lead, and appropriate regional and global staff to identify and execute real estate and space strategy

Develop and implement space plans to anticipate space requirements and evolving needs for office

Oversee facilities management including office design, maintenance, layout, and occupancy of offices, furniture, and overall office security, safety, and incident response procedures

Lead relocation efforts when an office move becomes necessary; coordinate build-out and interior design, together with global team

Ensure provision of a safe and appropriate office environment through facilities management including oversight of general maintenance, security, landlord relationships, art collection, maintenance of office space, including office furniture, fixtures and files

Manage office budgeting process to ensure optimized profitability and planning

Manage local budgets, controlling the cost related to local office and BST staff; forecast impact of planned expenses

 

7. Support finance function to ensure optimized profitability and planning

Provide guidance and counsel for all cost management. Operate in an environment of high service and optimize efficiency and cost managementEnsure effective revenue planning and trackingProvide counsel to office management on financial issues. Prepare appropriate ad hoc financial analysesAct as a liaison with regional and global staff, Regional Controller and Finance staff to comply with requirements for analysis, reporting, planning and to assist in development and implementation of regional initiatives and policies

 

8. Provide support and counsel to the System Lead, OL, and Managing Directors & Partners in the office, system and region

Support all Office leadership initiatives and projectsDevelop a deep and ongoing understanding of the business and environment in order to identify key decisions and actions that need to be takenServe as thought partner and counselor to OL and MDPs on a range of issuesProvide support to OL in developing annual strategic plans and financial plansDevelop agendas for and lead key meetings, e.g. all staff lunches and offsites, MDP meetings, cohort meetings, and/or OneBCG senior leadership meetingsContribute to Great Lakes Management team and committees as appropriateProvide leadership and management for other office and system-wide initiatives as requiredManage office communications to build a strong office culture, promote transparency and clear understanding of office goals and priorities, market upcoming events and opportunities, etc.Support System Lead and Great Lakes Leadership Team in developing and refining a system-level strategy for Great Lakes SATT initiatives, to be implemented locally by each officeTranslate high-level business priorities such as market and client development activities into SATT principles that can be used alongside local office strategiesReview progress regularly to ensure Office Leaders, MDPs, and other staff are focused effectively on strengthening offices' connections to key industry groups, broader business communities, economic development organizations, etc. for the purpose of expanding BCG’s reach and commercial opportunitiesChampion and support these SATT initiatives in the Minneapolis office with engagement from the Minneapolis Leadership TeamEngage with NAMR Marketing and Alumni leaders alongside GL Career Services & Alumni nodes to drive alignment of office alumni events to commercial and SATT objectivesWork with Great Lakes Finance team and GL Leadership Team to support a consistent budget approach for SATT and client-sponsored social impact initiative

 

9. Represent office on the NABLT and actively support regional initiatives

Support regional initiatives designed to improve overall performance in North AmericaActs as local liaison to NABLT team; cooperate in the development and implementation of regional policiesParticipate in regional projects as member of the NABLT
