The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated Microbiologist I to join our diagnostic laboratory team. This role plays a vital part in performing diagnostic testing across a range of disciplines including Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Serology. As a key member of our clinical support staff, you'll be responsible for delivering accurate laboratory results to Nursing and Medical personnel, ensuring meticulous recordkeeping of patient data and quality control. The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Inspects and evaluates laboratory instruments; performs basic mechanical repairs and adjustments to ensure functionality prior to testingConducts and records routine equipment calibrations according to departmental proceduresResponds promptly to phone inquiries from clinical staff and reference laboratories, providing accurate information and supportMonitors inventory levels and notifies supervisor of supply shortages or replenishment needsCompiles and maintains statistical data for monthly and annual reportsFollows written and verbal instructions with precision and attention to detailCommunicates clearly and professionally in both oral and written formatsParticipates in seminars, workshops, and meetings to remain current with laboratory practices and advancementsAdheres to safety protocols when handling biohazardous materials; consistently uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)Provides intermittent training and mentorship to interns, laboratory assistants, and junior staff as directed by the Laboratory DirectorDocuments remedial actions taken to address quality control concerns or equipment performance issuesRequired Qualifications:

Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.
The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.
