MFG Functional Technician Lead, Amazon Manufacturing Services
Amazon Manufacturing Services is an internal Amazon service specializing in the production of high-quality components through additive manufacturing (3D printing), CNC machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, powder coating, and assembly. We serve design engineers, product developers, operations engineers, and retail product concept testing teams across Amazon.

About the Role

AMS seeks a Welder to perform welding operations on manufactured components using manual MIG, TIG, and laser welding processes. You will weld parts produced through CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication, ensuring high-quality welds that meet customer specifications and industry standards. This role requires strong welding skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with various materials and joint configurations.

Key job responsibilities
Welding Operations
• Perform manual welding using MIG, TIG, and laser welding processes on steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other materials
• Weld components produced through CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication
• Read and interpret welding symbols, engineering drawings, and work instructions
• Set up welding equipment and select appropriate filler materials, gases, and parameters
• Perform tack welding, fit-up, and final welding operations
• Weld various joint configurations including butt joints, fillet welds, and corner joints
• Grind, clean, and finish welds as required

Quality and Inspection
• Inspect welds visually for defects including porosity, cracks, incomplete fusion, and distortion
• Verify welds meet welding procedure specifications (WPS) and customer requirements
• Perform dimensional checks on welded assemblies
• Identify and report quality issues to Welding Lead and quality engineers
• Maintain accurate welding records and documentation
• Support first article inspections for new welding specifications

Equipment Operation and Maintenance
• Operate MIG, TIG, and laser welding equipment safely and effectively
• Perform routine maintenance on welding equipment including cleaning and consumable replacement
• Monitor gas flow rates, wire feed speeds, and other welding parameters
• Replace welding tips, nozzles, and contact tubes as needed
• Report equipment issues to Welding Lead
• Maintain organized welding area and tools

Material Handling and Preparation
• Retrieve components from manufacturing departments for welding operations
• Prepare materials for welding including cleaning, degreasing, and fit-up
• Use fixtures and clamps to hold parts during welding
• Handle welded assemblies carefully to prevent damage
• Organize completed welds and prepare for downstream operations (powder coating, assembly)
• Maintain organized work area and enforce 5S standards

Safety and Compliance
• Follow all safety protocols and hot work procedures
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including welding helmets, gloves, and protective clothing
• Maintain clean and safe work environment
• Handle welding gases and materials safely
• Report safety hazards or concerns immediately
• Support ISO 9001 compliance through proper documentation
• Ensure proper ventilation and fume extraction during welding operations

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Coordinate with CNC and sheet metal teams on component readiness and welding priorities
• Communicate with Welding Lead on quality issues or process improvements
• Work with quality engineers on welding investigations
