Job Summary:
In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values, Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Within the context of a client service culture is responsible for a permanent, evening/night shift and performs duties such as supervising and coordinating the technical activities of staff, overseeing the quality of technical work performed, assisting in the development and implementation of orientation programs and completing a variety of routine and/or complex tests in accordance with established procedures.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Supervises and coordinates technical activities for a designated laboratory area by performing duties such as creating rotation schedules, setting daily priorities, providing technical advice, advising on abnormal or questionable test results, troubleshooting work related issues and providing training and orientation in conjunction with Technical Coordinator and Operations Manager to ensure adherence to departmental standards; participates on interview panels for staff selection and refers disciplinary issues requiring formal written documentation to Operations Manager.
2. Oversees the quality of technical work performed within the area and ensures the quality of results by methods such as checking procedures are completed according to established protocols and procedures, identifying inconsistencies and areas for audits, participating in discussions with both supervisory, technical and medical staff, implementing new systems and procedures in conjunction with Technical Coordinator, checking completed tests and taking appropriate corrective action to ensure operations meet departmental standards.
3. Supervises quality control for assigned area by methods such as developing protocols in conjunction with medical personnel and technical coordinators, checking with technologists to ensure tests are conducted according to established protocols, identifying instrument malfunction and/or out of control test results, taking and documenting all corrective action and assisting with resolutions to difficult quality control issues by determining appropriate internal/external action according to established protocols.
4. Assists in the development and implementation of orientation programs for the area by performing duties such as liaising with Teaching Technologist, Operations Manager, medical personnel and technical staff to determine requirements and recommendations, creating orientation checklists for new staff, scheduling orientation sessions and ensuring staff attendance, compiling information packages to ensure staff are familiar with departmental policies, procedures and standards of practice and distributing them as appropriate.
5. Schedules in-services for newly approved techniques and procedures for the area by methods such as liaising with Technical Coordinator to determine learning needs and instructing designated staff in procedures and quality control techniques.
6. Oversees report preparation and distribution where required by checking various functions are completed according to established procedures and time lines such as computerized lab results printed on schedule, reports sorted by correct method, distribution lists maintained, and documents forwarded to designated areas as required.
7. Supervises the preparation of specimens for transport to other facilities by methods such as checking items have been packaged correctly and related transport forms have been completed in accordance with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations.
8. Oversees set up, calibration and maintenance of a variety of laboratory instruments by performing duties such as training and monitoring staff to follow established cleaning procedures at prescribed intervals, and running calibrators, standards and controls to ensure all test results are precise and accurate as required.
9. Oversees and participates in maintaining a clean and safe work area by checking work stations are cleaned after use, checking laboratory area equipment, work surfaces and benches have been wiped down according to established procedures and monitoring staff safety techniques to ensure safety precautions are used at all times.
10. Oversees the preparation of a variety of solutions, reagents, standards and controls by methods such as identifying requirements, providing guidance to technical staff, checking stock levels of solutions, chemicals and/or ingredients and placing orders as necessary; prepares medium by measuring ingredients according to prescribed instructions for use in testing procedures as required.
11. Performs routine and/or complex tests as required in areas of the laboratory by performing functions such as following established guidelines and methods, utilizing automated instruments or manual techniques, validating tests performed by checking results, entering patient results into a computerized system and referring questionable results to medical personnel for direction in accordance with established policies and procedures.
12. Collects and receives a variety of specimens when required by methods such as reviewing requirements on requisitions, collecting specimens from patients according to established procedures, receiving, labelling and documenting specimens from various areas within the facility and/or patients and following established safety measures to maintain the integrity of the specimen during the collection, preparation, transport, processing and storage stages.
13. Maintains inventory of supplies by methods such as identifying depleting stock, notifying applicable personnel and/or completing requisitions and forwarding to Technical Coordinator for approval.
14. Responds to enquiries on items such as collection procedures and test results by methods such as retrieving information from manuals or computerized patient files and relaying information as appropriate.
15. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
Current registration with the Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists as a General Registered Technologist, four (4) years' recent, related experience, including supervisory experience and/or completion of a supervisory program, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
