Job summary The primary role of a Medical Scribe is to assist physicians by accurately documenting patient encounters and medical information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in real-time. They aim to free up the provider’s time for direct patient care, resulting in increased efficiency, improved patient satisfaction, and a more streamlined workflow.
Responsibilities
Real-time Documentation: Accompanying the healthcare provider during patient visits, either in person or virtually, to observe and document the interaction. Recording the patient’s history, chief complaints, physical exam findings, assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and other evaluations. Documenting procedures performed by the physician and other healthcare professionals. Medical Record Management: Accurately entering information into the patient’s EHR system. Updating patient histories, physical exams, and other relevant health information. Monitoring the duration of lab results and screening procedures. Preparing and assembling medical record documentation for physician review and signature. Ensuring medical record compliance and adhering to privacy regulations such as HIPAA. Administrative and Clerical Support (as needed and permitted by facility policy): Ordering X-rays, referrals, or other diagnostic tests under the physician’s direction. Assisting with administrative tasks like handling phone calls and organizing documentation. Facilitating the completion of admission, transfer, and discharge forms.Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: One (1) year of experience providing nursing in a medical or psychiatric setting. License: Possession of a valid California license as a Psychiatric Technician, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse. Possess a valid California driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain. Skills: Typing Speed and Accuracy: Fast and accurate typing skills are essential, with some employers preferring 60 words per minute or more. Attention to Detail: Meticulous documentation of patient information and physician instructions is crucial. Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for effective interaction with physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, word processing, and database software programs is highly valued. Organizational and Time Management Skills: The ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple patients, and maintain efficiency in a fast-paced environment is important. Adaptability and Quick Thinking: The ability to adjust to different physicians, patient scenarios, and workflows is beneficial. Professionalism and Work Ethic: Punctuality, reliability, and a commitment to high-quality work are expected. Other Requirements: Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
