Job Description:
The Medical Director of Surgery at facility will work collaboratively in a (dyad/triad-Surgery, Anesthesia, OR Manager) partnership to define, establish, and oversee the work of Surgical Services at their facility, working collaboratively with all disciplines. The Medical Director provides the respective facility with leadership, oversight, and support for the development of a culture of high reliability and the measurement of care, identifying opportunities, building relationships, executing on strategies to drive the performance and measured improvement in surgical care delivery. They will oversee performance all tasks necessary to provide safe, efficient, high-quality patient care. Responsible in tandem with operations and nursing officers for the administrative, financial, and clinical performance of the operating rooms of the facility. The Medical Director will assist in maintaining an appropriate operating room environment. Where possible, the Department Chair will fill the role of Medical Director of Surgery at the facility to help better align facility surgical administration with surgical operations.Scope: This is a facility-level leadership role that requires involvement at a system level within the One Intermountain structure. Success in the role requires key organizational relationships across Intermountain Health with a specific focus on leading the performance and continuous improvement of surgery at the respective facility. The Medical Director of Surgery will report to the hospital Chief Medical Officer and strongly partner with the Senior Medical Director of Intermountain Surgical Services. Where applicable, the Department Chair role will report to the Hospital Medical Director and Medical Executive Committee of the chair's respective facility.

Leadership
Leads Physician/Advanced Practice Provider collaborations and defines and establishes care models that best meet our patient's needs and our system fundamentalsWhere applicable, fulfill Department Chair duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws and in the Department/Division Rules and RegulationsEnsures that evidence-based clinical care standards for Surgical Services are established and effectively implemented in the respective Intermountain facilityResponsible for execution of policies and procedures related to operating room environmentsAssists in educating compliance with appropriate standards required by all governmental and regulatory agenciesChampions quality initiatives and policies and reports infractions, collaborating to eliminate future infractionsAddress opportunities and maintain successes in patient and provider experienceConduct regular Operating Room Council meetings, in conjunction with dyad/triad partners, to address safety, efficiencies, outcomes, policies, scheduling, utilization, system initiatives, and facility-specific needsRegular attendance of meetings, which include but are not limited to: Facility Operating Room Council, Surgical Services Council, facility-specific councils/committeesAssist in quality reportingEffectively addresses performance concerns for providers, including peer review for casesMaintain standards of safetyAddress inappropriate or unprofessional behavior as outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws and in the Rules and RegulationsPromote caregiver engagementAssist in the development and maintenance of operational, financial, and fundamentals of extraordinary care metricsCollaborate with facility and system colleagues for strategic and best practice development and implementationDevelopment and implementation of committees when necessary to address the needs of surgery including but not limited to utilization, quality, new products, and strategyPartner with inpatient hospital operations to maximize environment of careMaintain environment of collegiality with staff, consultants, and inpatient caregiversEstablish, exemplify, and communicate professional standards for physicians within surgeryEnsures physician alignment with Surgical Services at the facilityStewardship
Work collaboratively with departmental director(s) to optimize management of cost controls and efficiencies.Address and inform capital needsPartnership with SCO and Intermountain surgical Value Analysis Teams for value and cost savings initiativesSupports and drives results for the fundamentals of care for Intermountain with concern for reducing the cost of care (cost per case, per member per month costs) with the focus on improving the affordability of healthcarePhysician Partnership and Support:
Meet regularly with leadership to develop strong relationships with providers and to discuss information that is essential to the successful performance of the unit(s)/department.Supports and drives results for key metrics identified through Specialty Based Care and Surgical ServicesParticipate in the care site Medical Director Council.Physical Requirements:
Minimum Requirements
MD or DO with ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in a relevant specialty.Active Medical LicensureMinimum three years of clinical experience in relevant specialty and experience in leading successful quality improvement projects within the clinical setting.Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.Three years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.Physical Requirements
