Position Overview
The Mechanical Supervisor will be responsible for leading and supervising mechanical maintenance and operational activities at the Client's manufacturing facility. This role requires ensuring all mechanical systems, equipment, and installations operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with the Client's standards, international requirements, and all applicable Sri Lankan regulations. The position demands strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
1. Supervision and Leadership
Supervise and provide technical leadership to mechanical technicians and other service provider personnel assigned to mechanical maintenance activities
Plan, assign, and monitor daily work activities of the mechanical maintenance team
Conduct daily Direction Setting Meetings to review previous day's performance and plan current day's activities
Ensure adequate staffing levels and skill coverage across all shifts and operational periods
Monitor and evaluate team performance, providing coaching and development support
Ensure all team members adhere to the Client's safety regulations, operational procedures, and quality standards
2. Mechanical Systems Maintenance and Operation
Boiler Systems & Steam Distribution:
Oversee operation of Stone Danks Boiler (10,000 Lb @ 150 psi) and Forbes Marshall Boiler (10,000 Lb @ 150 psi)
Ensure steam availability for production operations from 6:00 AM through end of shift
Monitor and maintain condensate recovery systems and flash steam recovery systems
Supervise inspection and maintenance of steam traps, shut-off valves, control valves, and pressure gauges throughout the steam distribution network
Ensure proper operation of make-up tanks, feed water systems, and water treatment plants
Monitor Furnace Fuel Oil (FFO) distribution system, including pumps, storage tanks, day tanks, and oil heater units
Update boiler logbooks hourly with FFO consumption, water consumption, steam consumption, stack temperature, and feed water temperature
Monitor daily FFO stock levels and report to Engineering Management by 8:30 AM
Coordinate annual boiler inspections and certifications with independent boiler surveyors
Ensure weekly boiler feed water and blow-down water sampling and testing
Compressed Air Systems:
Oversee operation and maintenance of main site compressors (Compressor No. 1, 2, and 3)
Ensure compressed air network reliability for SMD and other production areas
Manage air dryer units and maintain required air quality standards
Monitor and maintain all soft links, flex links, and distribution systems
Vacuum Systems:
Supervise operation of centralized vacuum plant including Nash Vacuum pumps (No. 1 and 2)
Maintain vacuum reservoir and distribution systems
Oversee CDEU (Central Dust Extraction Unit) operations and tobacco feed plants
Ensure proper operation of large fan assemblies (6 units) and check for vibration and noise
Material Handling Equipment:
Supervise forklift operations and battery-operated material handling equipment
Ensure proper maintenance and charging of forklift batteries
Monitor battery charger operations and adjust charging periods as required
Coordinate forklift services for MSG/MSW operations and Material Stores
Maintain battery maintenance records and ensure optimal battery life
3. Preventive and Predictive Maintenance
Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) schedules for all mechanical equipment
Create and maintain Centrelines for all critical mechanical systems
Monitor all changes to Centrelines using change logs and communicate benefits to management
Manage Cleaning, Inspection, and Lubrication (CIL) cycles with onsite contractors
Utilize PM cards, Dice Charts, and Work Process Analysis (WPA) for key machinery
Develop and execute long-term maintenance cycles to achieve zero unplanned downtime
Conduct lifecycle and lifetime analysis for critical equipment
Implement One Point Lessons (OPL) for continuous improvement
4. Breakdown Management and Problem Solving
Respond immediately to mechanical equipment breakdowns and emergencies
Lead root cause analysis investigations for all mechanical failures
Gather and collate information on minor stops, process failures, and breakdowns through the Daily Management System (DMS)
Use breakdown elimination tools including Loss Tree development for key machinery
Maintain and manage defect handling logs
Implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence
Achieve and maintain established Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) targets
Coordinate with external OEM agents for complex repairs as required
5. Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance
Ensure strict adherence to the Client's Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Guidelines and policies
Conduct and document Safety Maps and QRP (Quick Response to Problems) cards
Implement and maintain Safety Trigger protocols
Ensure all personnel wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliant with European Standards
Obtain and manage work permits for hot work, work at height, confined space entry, and excavation
Display appropriate demarcations and warning signs at work areas
Ensure all mechanical work complies with cyber security requirements and safety standards
Report and investigate any safety incidents or near-misses
Coordinate annual medical examinations for all team members
Maintain zero safety and environmental non-compliance record
6. Quality and Performance Management
Ensure all mechanical work meets the Client's quality standards and specifications
Achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including:
On-time completion of projects
Zero damages to Client properties and personnel
Zero safety and environmental non-compliance
100% availability of critical systems
Achievement of established MTBF targets
Conduct weekly Integrated Work System (IWS) health checks targeting scores above 60%
Monitor and maintain equipment performance against established baselines
Ensure zero product mix-ups in all mechanical operations supporting production
7. Documentation and Record Keeping
Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of all mechanical maintenance activities
Update daily logbooks for boilers, generators, and other critical equipment
Complete and file all maintenance checklists, inspection reports, and test results
Maintain records of:
FFO consumption and stocks
Water consumption by area
Equipment running hours and maintenance histories
Spare parts usage and inventory
Training records for team members
Prepare and submit monthly reports on mechanical systems performance
Maintain SAP notifications and work orders for all maintenance activities
Ensure all records are available for audit purposes
8. Coordination and Communication
Liaise with the Client's Engineering Management Team including:
Engineering and Site Services Manager
Plant Manager
Projects Manager
Assistant Managers (Electronics/Services)
Engineering Executives
Coordinate with other service providers and contractors on site
Communicate effectively with production departments to minimize disruption
Participate in weekly formal update meetings with the Client's management
Attend and contribute to monthly performance review meetings
Report immediately any matters that may cause difficulty in service provision or jeopardize ability to perform obligations
9. Asset and Inventory Management
Maintain accountability for all tools, equipment, and assets used by the mechanical team
Ensure proper storage and security of mechanical spares and consumables
Coordinate procurement of required spare parts through the Client's Procurement Department
Maintain adequate inventory of critical spare parts and consumables
Ensure all tools and test equipment comply with European Standards and are in safe working condition
Manage use of 110V AC tools and battery-operated equipment as per the Client's requirements
Maintain torque wrenches and other specialized tools in calibrated condition
10. Energy Management and Optimization
Monitor and optimize energy consumption of mechanical systems
Implement energy-saving initiatives and report results to management
Track and analyze:
FFO consumption and steam/fuel ratios
Electrical energy consumption by mechanical systems
Compressed air system efficiency
Support the Client's sustainability and environmental objectives
11. Compliance and Governance
Ensure compliance with:
Sri Lankan Labour Laws and regulations
Standards of Business Conduct (SoBC)
Supplier Code of Conduct (SCoC)
Responsible Marketing Standards
Supply Chain Compliance Procedures
Intelligence Compliance Procedures
Data Protection Policy
Immediately report any compliance concerns to the Client's management
Participate in compliance audits and inspections
Ensure all activities support the Client's anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements:
Education:
National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 4 or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Qualification from German Training Institute (GTI), Advanced Training Institute (ATI), or reputable Technical Institute established under Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technical Education
Experience:
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
Proven experience in a food processing plant, FMCG manufacturing facility, or similar industrial environment
Demonstrated experience in:
Boiler operation and maintenance (high-pressure steam systems)
HVAC and air conditioning systems
Compressed air and vacuum systems
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Material handling equipment
Technical Skills:
Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, maintenance practices, and troubleshooting techniques
Proficiency in preventive and predictive maintenance methodologies
Understanding of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) principles
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and specifications
Knowledge of steam systems, boiler operations, and water treatment
Familiarity with industrial safety standards and practices
Competencies:
Proven leadership and team management abilities
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Excellent communication skills in English and Sinhala (Tamil is an advantage)
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and maintenance management systems (SAP knowledge preferred)
Commitment to continuous improvement and learning
Desirable Requirements:
Class 1 Boiler Operator License
Certification in HVAC systems or refrigeration
Training in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or TPM
Experience with SAP or similar Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems
Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or ISO 45001 standards
First Aid certification
Physical and Medical Requirements
Medical Fitness: Must be certified medically fit for work
Must be free from chronic diseases and physical disabilities that would prevent safe performance of duties
Ability to work in industrial environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and conditions
Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and work at heights when required
Capability to wear required PPE for extended periods
