Basic Function
The Mechanical Engineering Manager is responsible for researching, planning, and designing mechanical and electro-mechanical products and systems related to our flow and pressure measurement and control product families for the Technology Development team. In addition to strong technical design contributions, this position is also responsible for providing leadership oversight for a team of mechanical engineers and serving as the mechanical design subject matter expert where he / she will ensure engineering best practices are followed across the entire mechanical engineering team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leads the mechanical design team across all new product development projects acting as the mechanical engineering subject matter expert.
Directly supervise a small group of mechanical engineers and recommend adjustments to the staff as needed.
Develop and/or interpret product requirements specifications, and complex drawings or schematics.
Work with Marketing and project teams to define detailed Mechanical Hardware requirements to meet system level product requirements.
Work with project team and operations organization to build requirements for product manufacturing process.
Orchestrate cross functional reviews of engineering requirements and mechanical design, DFMEA reviews, and PFMEA reviews.
Coordinates selection and validation of product subcomponents (ie pressure sensors, flow sensors, valve actuators, etc)
Selects materials of construction and machining process to ensure that product design meets SEMI industry standards and performs appropriately with gas chemistries used in the semiconductor manufacturing space.
Manage resource loading of Mechanical Engineering team in order to meet project deliverables and ensure that engineering hours are being accurately tracked.
Manage R&D expenses of Mechanical Engineering team and provide input on budget and capital planning.
Coordinates preliminary cost estimates with support from the sourcing department for new product design.
Designs molded, welded, etched, stamped, machined, and extruded components including close coordination with the electrical design group.
Coordinates and/or performs design verification and validation testing of new designs.
Identifies, in conjunction with marketing and engineering management, promising areas of research or technology that address current needs and have larger potential markets.
Utilizes originality, ingenuity, and creativity to manage complex and large scope project assignments.
Modifies existing product designs to improve performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability.
Coordinates mechanical documentation efforts using Sharepoint repositories and TeamCenter.
Creates 3D model and part files for components and assemblies in SolidWorks, build product MPL’s, and create product BOM’s.
Communicates regularly with program management the status of projects under development.
Mentors and assists mechanical engineers in the engineering principals and procedures for product design, development, fabrication, and testing.
Maintains and enhances department safety policies and procedures.
Provide work leadership and training to lower level professional and technical staff.
Participates in the recruitment, hiring, and development of team members to include collaboratively setting employee goals and providing performance review feedback.
Support Company continuous improvement initiatives.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to make technical contributions to a multi-disciplinary research and development team required.
Proficiency with developing electro-mechanical valves preferred.
Competency to lead and manage mechanical design projects required.
Proven experience validating designs through modeling and simulation. Matlab and Simscape experience a plus.
Technical report writing skills required.
Excellent communicator who exhibits strong, verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook required.
An assertive, results-oriented leader who is a consummate team player and who can effectively negotiate with others to achieve win-win outcomes.
Education and Experience
BS in Mechanical Engineering required. MS in Engineering a plus.
Prior leadership or supervision experience a plus
Ability to motivate and direct an engineering team, as well as make direct technical contributions required.
7-10 years of experience in high precision mechanical design.
Advanced experience bringing designs to production using design for manufacturing techniques, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA's) and other quality control techniques.
3D Solidworks modeling, drawing generation and CAD database experience required.
