Mechanical Design Engineer

**JOB DUTIES:** Full ownership of New Product Development (NPD) Design projects. Performing design verification on original and derivative design ideas using analytical and experimental methods e.g. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) & Failure Modes Effect Analysis (FMEA). Performing development testing, engineering analysis, qualification testing, and production launch. Resolving problems of moderate scope using engineering fundamentals. Executing scripted Design/Process Validation (DV/PV) testing with limited support. Completing Failure Analysis investigations and engineering evaluations. Maintain product documentation (drawings and specifications) and lessons learned. Interacting with customers to solicit product specifications requirements, schedule expectations and budget. Leveraging knowledge of basic electrical circuits, microelectronic assembly, statistical methods, process control fundamentals, and product test processes. Following standard practices and procedures and deviating when necessary. Occasionally receiving general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. Contributing and generates ideas, methods, solutions without benefit of defined procedures in internal and external situations. Strongly influencing design for manufacturability. Clearly presenting design concepts to customers, managers and peers verbally and using formal presentations. Leveraging CAD/3D tools such as Solidworks. Collaborating with local and global engineering teams on product design to satisfy customer specifications in electric vehicle applications. Ensuring alignment of design, cost, and manufacturability. Requires 10% domestic and international travel to Sensata locations including but not limited to Troy, Michigan and Aguascalientes, Mexico.
**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:** Bachelor’s Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering and 7 years of mechanical design engineering experience. **OR** Master’s Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronic Engineering and 5 years of mechanical design engineering experience.
Experience must include (with bachelor's or master's) 5 years of experience in: (i) developing and documenting design improvements based on failure mode, pugh matrix, and simulations reviews; (ii) establishing design and process controls for robust product launch development and design completions related production part approval process documentation for automotive customers based on failure modes and effects analyses; (iii) designing mechanical systems of automotive components using CAD tools and fundamentals of engineering; (iv) using finite element analysis simulations, or functional testing, to evaluate designs for all use conditions, tolerance stack, and mechanical drawings; (v) reviewing supplier offerings to determine critical specific characteristics; (vi) customer facing product development, including: (a) evaluating customer engineering requirements, (b) developing product validation plans, (c) executing new product development tools to ensure robust engineering solution; (d) engaging with suppliers to develop new components that meet system engineering requirements, and (e) managing and analyzing validation test plans, teardowns and interpretation of results to inform customer of product readiness; (vii) supporting yield and quality issues at production make site; (viii) conducting failure analysis and interpreting findings; (ix) coordinating with external test labs; and (x) managing root-cause and problem solving actions.
Must be proficient in using Minitab, Visual Studio Code (Python), Matlab, APIS, Solidworks and Solidworks Simulation, EMWorks, and Microsoft SQL Server.
