Materials Lab Engineer
Job Description

Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI, three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role

You will be responsible for performing hands on testing, providing test direction and resolving complex technical issues on a variety projects. You will need to be creative and take initiative as well as use a high level of independent discernment.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

The engineer will provide materials characterizations and failure analysis to support development and current production changes for Battery Cells, EV & ICE Components, VDDV & Material Cards.

The lab engineer will perform specialized sample preparation and operation of analytical equipment to characterize virtually every component in GM vehicles. There are many materials that the engineer will characterize in support of development and production. Some examples include aluminum and ferrous castings, forgings & sheet products, adhesives, rubbers, polymers, coatings, and surface geometries. Examples of battery cell components are anodes, cathodes, separators, current collectors, cathode insulation coatings (CIC), and active material.

The engineer will author laboratory reports to provide key data and conclusions to stakeholders, participate in solution development for engineering related product problems (root cause), coordinate maintenance and calibration of assigned equipment, and perform lab administrative tasks associated with safety, quality, and responsiveness.   

This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Math, Physics or other relevant degree.

2+ years of post-graduation experience in a Materials Laboratory or Materials Engineering

Comfortable working with hand tools and power tools to disassemble parts and assemblies

Ability to troubleshoot complex problems, often with incomplete information, to arrive at a root cause

Basic mechanical knowledge of automotive components.    

Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others

Able to juggle several projects at the same time and prioritize as necessary

Strong oral and written communications skills

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

A degree in Materials Science & Engineering

3 to 5 Years Experience in a Materials Laboratory or Materials Engineering

Experience with Hardness Testing, Operation of Load Frames, Environmental Chambers, Optical & Electron Microscopy, Metallography, and CT X-ray
