Materials Engineer II - Nitride

As a Materials Engineer, you will be responsible for utilizing professionally accepted engineering principles and techniques to engineer and oversee all aspects of ceramic material manufacturing, process/product implementation and quality control. You will also be responsible for understanding and managing internal materials-related customer requirements.

Job Description Summary

Under limited supervision, responsible for utilizing professionally accepted engineering principles and techniques to collaborate with engineering and materials process operations in all aspects of ceramic material manufacturing, process/product implementation and quality control. This specific role will be responsible for CoorsTek nitride powder preparation (raw material to final properties) as well as supporting down-stream operations, including forming, firing and post-processing.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Under limited supervision, applies accepted engineering principles and efficiently completes assigned tasks conferring with supervisor on complex matters, specific assignment objectives, points of emphasis or possible solutions as needed in the production of ceramic related materials.Monitor production processes to ensure product consistency and quality and drives corrective actions as necessary.Independently release raw and finished materials to the production floor.Develop and maintain complete and accurate written records and process documentation for new and existing products, processes and improvements to existing products and/or processes.Focus on increasing process efficiency by actively participating in, or leading continuous improvement activities through research, benchmarking and identification of improved methods or tools.Maintain and/or improve material properties and performance by providing feedback and direction to operations team based on data from raw materials, in-process testing and finished material characterization.Employ a structured approach to define objectives, track/communicate progress and verify results.Collect and correlates production data to identify result discrepancies. Analyzes the data and makes recommendations to support and drive continuous improvementsAbility to interpret/analyze tests results to improve methodology and performance of ceramic products.In depth knowledge and application of material characterization and analytic test methods, including (but not limited to) particle size/surface area analysis, comminution, powder properties, compaction-shrinkage behavior, chemistry and microstructural evolution.Effectively utilize SPC tools (i.e. control charts, DOE’s, etc.) to maintain and improve product and process quality.Work with internal customers to understand their process capabilities and helps identify critical material parameters.Actively engage with raw material suppliers to ensure product quality and consistencySupport in the development/qualification of new formulations and raw materials to meet product and/or customer (internal/external) needs.Work closely with internal customers and manufacturing personnel to provide technical support and timely initial response on material related issues.Comply to and champion improvements to established safety protocols including material handling, PPE, and proper material disposal & documentation.

Job Requirements:

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Ceramic, Materials Science or other related field.Minimum 3 years’ related materials engineering experience.

Functional/Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of nitride and non-oxide raw material properties.Prior experience with precursor ceramic and solvent processing and equipment is preferred.Prior experience with characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, LECO, Thermal Conductivity) and microstructural analysis is desirable.Analytical/Critical Thinking - Analyzes data to identify root causes, develops strategies for routine issues, recommends process improvements, and evaluates solutions with flexibility and critical thinking.Building Relationships - Recognizes others meaningfully and frequently, uses feedback to build confidence and respect, adapts communication to workplace styles, and actively participates in team-building activities.Communication - Communicates using empathy, influence, and an adaptive approach to accurately and persuasively create dialogue.Data Analysis - Independently designs and conducts data analysis using advanced techniques, automation, and benchmarking to identify trends, anticipate risks, and influence stakeholders through data storytelling.Materials Knowledge - Working knowledge of general ceramic processing, including particle size reduction, slurry rheology, spray drying, forming methods, sintering and microstructural analysis.Project Management - Leads projects through all phases, from initiation to closing, by defining scope, planning resources, managing teams, ensuring effective communication, and documenting progress and results.

Target Hiring Range

Annual Salary: USD 80,532.00 - USD 106,303.00
