**Job Title: Shipyard Painter**
**Job Description**
The Shipyard Painter is responsible for cleaning and preparing wood or metal surfaces for painting, removing dirt, grease, rust, scale, and other contaminants. This role involves masking and taping areas not requiring painting, painting parts, equipment, and structural surfaces on the interior and exterior of ships and shipyard buildings, and mixing materials according to Product Data Sheets. Inspecting prepared painted areas and performing touch-up work as needed are integral to the position.
**Responsibilities**
+ Set up tools and equipment at job site to conduct surface preparation.
+ Prepare surfaces to be painted.
+ Set up spray paint equipment to conduct coating application.
+ Mix paint materials according to Product Data Sheet and apply coatings to surfaces.
+ Hand paint and/or spray paint in designated areas, inspect work for touch-up.
+ Perform housekeeping on assigned work areas during and at completion of work.
+ Operate high reach equipment to prepare surfaces and apply coating in hard-to-reach elevated areas.
+ Remove scrap and perform general cleaning and sweeping.
+ Work with the General Services Department in performing cross trade responsibilities, such as erecting and dismantling scaffold, water evacuation, load out and grooming compartments.
+ Collaborate with the Blast Department in performing cross trade responsibilities, such as blast setup, recovery, and blow down and final groom.
+ Housekeeping in all work areas, including sweeping.
+ Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings.
**Essential Skills**
+ One to three years of experience with hand brush and spray painting application or SSPC C-12 Certification accreditation.
+ Knowledge of surface preparation procedures and proper use and mixing of paints.
+ Ability to read and understand Product Data Sheet.
+ Ability to identify paint application requirements and equipment needed for coating application.
+ Ability to operate high reach equipment.
+ Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and on any shift.
+ Ability to access and move around ships safely.
+ Ability to observe differences in color.
+ Comprehension of written and verbal instructions, safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.
**Additional Skills & Qualifications**
+ Previous shipyard experience is preferred.
+ Knowledge of basic painting applications.

**Work Environment**
Work will support the T-AO New Construction Program in SOC 6. The work environment includes exposure to fumes, odors, dust, mist, and gases that may affect the respiratory system, as well as exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and moving machines and mechanical parts. Temperatures and ventilation may cause discomfort, and work may involve awkward postures and positions. Personal protective equipment is required. Physical involvement includes frequent lifting and carrying of painting equipment, occasional lifting up to 94 lbs of paint cans, pulling, standing, walking, reaching, sitting, kneeling, crawling, and frequent climbing and balancing. The environment demands maintaining general safety awareness and avoiding hazards commonly present in the work area.
**Job Type & Location**
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, California.
**Pay and Benefits**
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
