Managing Director - Treasury

The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a dynamic and highly skilled Managing Director – Treasury. In this high-impact role reporting directly to the Treasurer, this individual will provide institution-wide (Academic, Medical Center & Wise) leadership for Treasury strategy and operations, oversee liquidity management, cash projections, banking relationships, monitor debt and capital markets, and utilize internal banking services to supports Schools/Departments/Units across the organization. 
 
This role will work closely with senior leadership to ensure financial integrity, optimize resource allocation, and support UVA’s long-term operating, strategic and capital planning goals. 

Key Responsibilities 

Treasury Strategy & Leadership 

Lead the Treasury function with strategic vision and operational excellence across all UVA entities. 

Partner with senior leadership to align treasury strategy with institutional priorities. 

Provide stewardship for capital structure and liquidity platform. 

Partner with the University’s Financial Advisors in planning and capital market considerations. 

Lead efforts related to the Internal Bank and related investment management activities. 

Liaison with Medical Center Treasury staff on operational platforms (receivables, payables, inter-company pooling) to provide strategic and efficient working capital management. 

Act as an internal advisor to Medical Center staff on liquidity pooling/netting. Bank treasury management services, and bank account structures and related inter-company accounting (due to/from; eliminations; etc.). 

Coordinate with Foundations (UAOs) on liquidity and debt considerations that impact the Consolidated Financial Statements of R&V. 

Capital Markets & Debt Management 

Participate in UVA’s debt portfolio strategy to ensure access to capital at the lowest cost within agreed-upon risk tolerance. 

Work with external financial partners including underwriters, financial advisors, bond counsel, trustees, and rating agencies, to support organizational strategy. 

Ensure covenant compliance, reporting accuracy, and performance monitoring. 

Liquidity & Cash Management 

Oversee enterprise-wide cash forecasting, liquidity planning, and working capital optimization. 

Administer banking services and treasury operations including wire transfers, disbursements, and fraud mitigation tools. 

Oversee Treasury Associates that prepare daily cash position and optimize short-term investment strategies. 

Develop and maintain reporting platforms to provide Executive Leadership snapshots of liquidity, debt, investments, and related rates (return/expenses). 

Financial Risk Management 

Evaluate and mitigate financial risks including interest rate, credit, and currency exposures. 

Monitor counterparty exposures and develop internal credit guidelines. 

Participate in hedging and derivative strategies. 

Internal Banking & Investment Programs 

Oversee the internal loan and investment programs to support unit-level borrowing and investing needs. 

Conduct internal road shows to new Deans and Leadership about internal interest rates, lending policies, and investment options. 

Maintain internal financial models and reporting dashboards. 

Technology, Compliance & Controls 

Lead Treasury systems strategy and related technology implementations. 

Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory, legal, and accounting standards (e.g., IRS, SEC, GASB/FASB). 

Maintain robust internal controls and documentation over treasury activities. 

Stakeholder Engagement & Team Leadership 

Build and lead a high-performing Treasury team fostering collaboration, integrity, and continuous improvement. 

Provide strategic consultation to Academic, Medical Center and Wise on financial matters. 

Represent UVA Treasury in internal and external meetings/presentations and be the face of UVA Treasury in industry organizations (NACUBO) and peer groups (Treasury Symposium). 

 

Qualifications 

Required 

Master's degree in accounting or finance. 

7+ years of progressively responsible treasury, investment, accounting, capital markets, and financial leadership experience. 

Demonstrated expertise in liquidity, debt, and treasury operations in a large-scale, multifaceted, complex organization.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with executive presence. 

Proven leadership experience managing large teams and strategic initiatives in an Academic Medical Center (with direct experience in both the Academic and Medical Center functions). 

Preferred 

Master’s degree in Finance or Accounting

Professional designations:  CTP or CPA.

Familiarity with Workday or similar ERPs/TIMSs.

Public (State-Agency) institution experience in an Academic Medical Center.

This is an on-site position in Charlottesville, VA.
