Manager or Associate Director for Economics of Transformative AI Initiative (EconTAI)

The Economics of Transformative AI Initiative (EconTAI) is a new research forum at the University of Virginia, led by Anton Korinek, Professor in the Department of Economics. Our mission is to research the economic implications of advanced AI and policies to navigate the transition. The initiative is seeking a Manager or Associate Director to support its mission.

Core Administrative Responsibilities (All Candidates)

Maintain an overview of all activities and commitments and oversee all administrative aspects of the initiativeManage incoming correspondence of EconTAI faculty, ensuring timely responsesWork with research faculty to create processes and procedures to establish the initiativeProvide support for the initiative's events and meetings, managing logistics, communications, attendee registration, and onsite coordinationMaintain and update the initiative's website and social media accounts with current events, relevant news and research findingsTrack expenditures related to funding sources, providing regular updates on budget projections

Additional Research Coordination Responsibilities (Full-Time Position Only)

For candidates with research qualifications appointed to the full-time position, responsibilities will also include:

Oversee research projects and coordinate between faculty, research assistants, and visiting scholarsDraft research briefs, policy memos, and executive summaries for academic and policy audiencesCollaborate with the research faculty to formulate and execute a strategic planResearch grant opportunities, assist with proposal preparation, and track grant deliverablesPerform data collection and analysis in support of research goalsServe as liaison with policy makers, industry partners, and other research institutionsDevelop and oversee social media strategy to amplify research impact and engage broader audiences

Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree at Manager level. Master's degree is preferred and is required at the Associate director level.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple prioritiesProficiency with AI tools, website management, and other digital toolsExperience in administrative support, project management, or operationsInterest in societal effects of AIExperience with academic environmentsProficiency with programmingUnderstanding of economic conceptsAbility to research grant opportunities, assist with grant writing and submissions

For candidates focused on administrative and operational responsibilities, this position is at the Manager level and is part-time (20 hours/week, 0.5 FTE). For candidates with research qualifications (Master's degree required), the position may be at the Associate Director and full-time (40 hours/week, 1.0 FTE) with additional research coordination responsibilities. This position will be located on-site with a possible hybrid option over time and includes occasional travel for event support.
