SUMMARY:
Manages the provision of Therapeutic Recreation services and programs to patients/residents in order that social, physical, and cognitive functioning are maximized and a desirable quality of leisure life is attained.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership
Develops and sustains a departmental environment that supports RGHS of Newark Wayne and The DeMay Living Center’s philosophy of excellence through planning and implementation of programs that support the hospital’s mission and vision.Delegate’s authority and accountability to professional staff for appropriate responsibilities and decisions that are consistent with scope of practice (where applicable), rules and regulations of governmental authorities, and policies of the institution.Ensures the effective delivery of quality customer service through the nurturing of cooperative and collaborative inter- and intra-departmental relationships.Demonstrates working knowledge of CQI and actively utilizes and promotes CQI skills and tools in all departmental activities.Demonstrates customer service philosophy and serves as a departmental/ organizational role model.Accountable for selection of department staff based on position qualifications.Communicates effectively one to one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts. Writing is clear, precise, and well organized. Communications are appropriately adjusted for audience.Actively participates in Hospital committees and task forces as well as enables/encourages participation of staff.Prepares, recommends and maintains departmental operating budget. Utilizing principles of participative management, analyzes current and future trends and needs and accurately assesses department's competitive strengths and vulnerabilities. Develops and implements a strategic plan that supports the Hospital’s vision and mission; translates the strategic plan to staff to ensure support; and involving appropriate staff, modifies the plan in response to changing internal and external factors.Assures effective and appropriate utilization of all available resources to assure quality, effective services.Facilitates preparation, monitoring and maintenance of annual operating budget. Budget parameters of the department are regularly communicated to staff.Oversees development and implementation of service contracts with outside agencies and evaluates quality of service provided.Ensures maintenance of policies and procedures in accordance with department policies and regulatory agencies, objectives, QA/CQI program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.Staff Development
Facilitates development of department personnel, either by serving as a resource/teacher or providing educational opportunities through internal and/or external sources. Ensures that staff is competent to perform scope of responsibilities.Translates institutional values, goals and objectives to staff and others. Through words and actions demonstrates support for and understanding of the Hospital's policies, philosophies, and mission.Ensures participation of staff in educational opportunities; whether mandatory or non-mandatory, internal or external.Provides clear, thorough, performance feedback on a day-to-day basis. Within the context of high performance standards; thoroughly and sensitively provides constructive criticism. Sets clear, fair and challenging goals with subordinates. Performs duties of a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Music Therapist. (See job description 5816 for responsibilities.)Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.Professional Development

CPR certification (update every 2 years)Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy, Music or Art Therapy, Human Services or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and healthcare related work experiencePREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
