Manager Design & Construction Operations
Job Summary The Manager of Design and Construction Operations is responsible for overseeing all aspects of large-scale, multi-million-dollar capital projects from planning through execution. This role serves as a key technical and administrative leader within the Design and Construction Department and acts as a liaison with senior leadership to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives. Key Responsibilities: + Attend high-level planning and strategy meetings with senior leadership to align project goals with organizational priorities. + Oversee comprehensive project development including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, design, construction, and post-construction activities. + Manage and administer contracts related to architectural, engineering, and construction services. + Coordinate closely with internal departments such as Plant Engineering, Interior Design, and Facilities to ensure seamless integration of building systems, furniture, equipment, signage, and relocation planning. + Provide leadership and direction to internal project teams, including Design and Construction Managers and Senior Construction Managers. + Supervise and coordinate outsourced consultants, contractors, and vendors to maintain project quality, budget, and schedule. + Serve as a resource for quality assurance and maintain strong customer/client relationships throughout the project lifecycle. + Act as a “working manager” by directly managing select projects, offering hands-on support and guidance across all phases of project delivery. + Support staff development by providing coaching, mentorship, and performance management. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED, required . Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, or Construction Management, preferred. Experience: + Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the design and supervision of major hospital construction projects, required. + Minimum of one (1) year of experience in staff management or supervision of outsourced personnel, required. Licensure/Certification: + Professional licensure such as PE (Professional Engineer), AIA (American Institute of Architects), RA (Registered Architect), or NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification), preferred. Required Skills and Abilities: + Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents. + Strong written and verbal communication skills across diverse personality types and professional levels. + Strong interpersonal skills, including negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management. + Proven ability to lead and manage large-scale healthcare construction projects, including responsibility for project budgets, schedules, and design integrity. + Skilled in coordinating multiple contracts and vendors and making field decisions efficiently and effectively. + Demonstrated leadership in mentoring and supporting Design and Construction Management staff. + In-depth knowledge of state and federal healthcare construction regulatory requirements. + Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including but not limited to: + IBC (International Building Code) + ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) + DHSR (Division of Health Service Regulation) + NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) + JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) + ILSM (Interim Life Safety Measures) Technical Competencies: + Proficient in scheduling and project management software and systems. + Familiarity with real estate planning, facility renovation, contractor selection, and construction administration. + Strong client service orientation with the ability to understand and exceed customer expectations. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: + Ability to travel throughout the organization’s geographic footprint and manage multiple remote projects. + Capable of handling sedentary tasks and walking throughout work facilities. + May be required to relocate or adjust office equipment or furniture as part of move-in coordination. + Must be able to work at a computer and use standard office equipment. + Clear and professional telephone communication is essential. + May be required to work extended hours during emergency situations or major project deadlines. + Good manual dexterity and ability to read computer screens and printed material.
