Counterparty Market Risk (CMR) is a rapidly expanding Counterparty Credit Risk function that operates at the intersection of Market Risk and Credit Risk. Originally established to provide market risk oversight for Securities Financing Transactions (SFT) businesses—including Prime Services, Collateral Management, Funding, and Credit Total Return Swaps (TRS)—CMR has significantly broadened its mandate.
CMR now supports margin sufficiency analysis for all bank counterparties through comprehensive margin analysis and calibration, implements Counterparty Credit Risk (CCR) stress testing across all trading counterparties, and enhances counterparty credit risk analytics. CMR is responsible for identifying, assessing, and monitoring key market risks that impact counterparty exposures.
Leveraging advanced analytics and tailored risk management tools, CMR provides a critical risk management overlay that highlights tail and concentration risks. The team applies market risk measures at the counterparty level to effectively challenge both business activities and credit risk assessments. CMR closely integrates inputs from both Credit Risk and Market Risk teams to ensure a robust and holistic evaluation of counterparty risk.
