The Maintenance Trainee, BMNT participates in the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) consisting of developmental training for a period of two (2) years in Bus Fleet Maintenance (BMNT). The trainee must satisfactorily progress thru each of four (4) training Levels consisting of both classroom and on the job training/experience as contemplated in the TSP. Upon graduation the trainee will be placed into a job assignment as a Mechanic, grade C within the BMNT, performing the associated responsibilities under the close supervision of both management staff, as well as TSP "Mentor" mechanics assigned to provide on the job training (OJT) in the BMNT disciplines throughout the training period. ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively. **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** **Education** + High School Diploma or GED + Successful passing of written and/or computer-based entrance exams for reading comprehension, math and basic mechanical skills **Experience** + **Level C** + No prior experience required + **Level B** + A minimum six (6) months as a Level C Trainee and 1000 hours of work at that level + **Level A** + A minimum six (6) months as a Level B Trainee and 1000 hours of work as that level + **Level AA** + A minimum six (6) months as a Level A Trainee and 1000 hours of work at that level **Certification/Licensure** + Possession of a valid commercial driver¿s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for passenger bus and air brakes + Intra State Commercial Driver¿s License is accepted with a provisional appointment valid until age 21. + CDL learner's permit is acceptable but requires successful completion of the WMATA CDL training program and the acquisition of a valid CDL within 90-days of hire. + All applicants must produce a safe driving record with no more than four (4) points and one (1) moving violation accumulated over 24 months. **Preferred** + N/A **Medical Group** : Medical Group Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events. **SUMMARY** The Maintenance Trainee, Bus Maintenance is an apprentice position leading to graduation from the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) and the assignment to a General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic C. The incumbent is responsible for satisfactorily completing all formal (i.e., classroom) and On-the-Job Training (OJT) assigned over the two (2) year-long TSP program. The Incumbent must acquire at least one Automotive Service Excellence Certification (ASE) in the discipline of Transit Bus prior to completion of the TSP program. During OJT assignments, the incumbent works under close supervision of a Bus Maintenance Supervisor and under the tutelage of a Transit Bus Garage Mechanic mentor. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** + Attends formal training classes related to basic, intermediate and advanced urban transit bus maintenance. Passes all written and practical examinations with a score of 75% or higher. + Gains familiarity with and develops skills in the maintenance, inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of WMATA buses and equipment. + Under the direct oversight of assigned advanced level mechanics, uses hand tools, power tools and test equipment to inspect, diagnose and repair WMATA buses and equipment malfunctions in accordance with safety and maintenance procedures and practices. + Works in conjunction with assigned OJT mentors to affect repairs and service of WMATA vehicles and equipment. + Completes all documentation and reports associated with the operation and maintenance of WMATA buses and any required training documentation. + Assists supervisors and mechanical staff in emergencies by securing or safeguarding WMATA equipment, in the event of fire/life/safety incidents, snow emergencies, etc., according to established safety practices and maintenance guidelines **The** **functions** **listed are not intended to limit specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position.
