Summary This position is located in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the VA Western Colorado Health Care System (WCHCS), which provides comprehensive health care services to Veterans across Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. The primary purpose of the position is to perform a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, exterior structures, utilities, and related fixtures. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited too: Perform preventative maintenance and repair of VA owned equipment following the manufacturer's instructions including kitchen equipment, laundry equipment, housekeeping equipment. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs, installs or replaces building service hardware, floor coverings, vinyl and ceramic tile (wall and floor), roofs, windows, doors and frames, Formica and molding, ceiling tile, suspended ceilings, metal studs, etc. on existing buildings and structures. Repairs, installs, replaces, assembles or disassembles cabinetry, furniture (both wood and metal), repairs lockers and shelving, relocates and/or removes walls, doors, ceilings, etc., as required for alterations or renovation needs. Install and repair dry wall and use various spray machines. Work off of ladders (extension and all size step ladders). Determines the methods, techniques, devices and materials for surface finishes to be prepared or repaired. Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice, and paper, steel wool, filling shaping and leveling with synthetic resins. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing in various additives. Applies coating material with any of the accepted trade devices, including those designed to give special effects; _for example, brushes, rollers, spray guns, texture brushes, and dry walling. Supports grounds keeping tasks by performing landscaping, mowing, trimming, tractor operation, and trash or construction debris removal. This position assists in performing pigeon mitigation, snow clearing, and other grounds maintenance duties. Researching vendors, obtaining quotes, submitting requisition requests via the appropriate means including VistA and other computer systems, and supporting vendors in processes for government acquisitions. Assembles, constructs, reconstructs, and repairs metal furniture, shelving and other items pertaining to metal work as well as welding on carbon steel pipes (Arc, Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gast (TIG)) and fabrication of various items. Repairs and replaces all parts of bedside stands and cabinets and hospital equipment of various kinds. Operate various pieces of equipment, horizontal and vertical milling machine, lathes, power and hand drill presses, power band, cut off saws, power planes, and welders. Determines the layout, measurements, materials, and tools required to construct concrete structures (walls, slabs, footers, forms, etc.) at a journeyman level. Operate power tools such as gasoline powered trowel machine, concrete vibrators, jack hammers, mixers, masonry saws, and hand tools such as floats, trowels, screeds, shovels, rakes, chisels, and Georgia buggies. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:00am - 3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD10402A Physical Requirements: Work requires strenuous exertion in building, removing or replacing walls, floors; requires standing for long periods of time, working in heated or cold areas. Incumbent must work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs while sitting, kneeling, standing or stooping in an awkward position. Must handle heavy tools i.e. drills at arm's length and overhead from time to time). Must unload from trucks and place on storage racks such heavy and bulky materials as plywood, wallboard, hardboard, and other types of lumber and materials. Incumbent must work throughout all areas of the Health Care System. In some cases, they must go in out-of-the-way areas such as boiler/mechanical rooms, pipe chases, roofs, attics, basement, etc., which may require kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, etc. Frequently handles objects weighing 10 to 90 pounds. Project demands may require work at other than normal administrative hours. Working Conditions: Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Incumbent is subject to working out in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures and in confined dusty and dirty areas. Work is usually done in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. Outdoor work is normally done in good weather. Incumbent may occasionally work in dirty, dusty, hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical shock, high voltage, and hot components while working around equipment. At times, works around extremely high noise and vibration sources. Work in ward areas around sick patients. Incumbent may be called upon to work overtime and call-back in case of emergencies.
