Fairview Hospital's Level III Birthing Center provides care to patients in labor and delivery as well as provides treatments for patients undergoing elevated risk antepartum or postpartum. As an LPN in the birthing center, you will serve as the Cord Blood Coordinator, responsible for reviewing patient records to identify candidates, obtaining consent, collecting specimens, entering and managing data, communicating with the Cleveland Cord Blood Center and maintaining the environment and supplies in accordance with regulatory standards.
In this role, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes while further developing your nursing expertise through direct clinical experience and the extensive educational resources available within the Cleveland Clinic system. As part of these efforts, Cleveland Clinic has established a partnership with the Cleveland Cord Blood Center to facilitate access to potentially life-saving cord blood for transplantation.
A caregiver in this role works days from 6:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. with weekend requirements.
This position’s primary location is at Fairview Hospital but may require cross-coverage at Hillcrest Hospital as needed.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Obtain informed full consent of mother and maternal medical history and infant/delivery Data.
Label and prepare cord blood for courier transport to Cleveland Cord Blood Center with signed consent form and samples of blood.
Answer questions about public donation of cord blood.
Assist Obstetric MD/DO in collecting umbilical cord blood units (CBU) during final phase of labor.
Provide obstetricians with all materials needed for cord blood collection.
Obtain peripheral blood (PB) for infectious disease testing from the donating mother.
Collect, document and report patient data and observations.
Implement care plans as directed by an RN and contribute to care plan revisions.
Administer medications and/or treatments authorized by a provider and observe patients for adverse reactions.
Perform routine laboratory tests.
Educate patients and family members.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program
Current Ohio licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of patient care experience
OB background
Hospital experience in a procedural area
Acute care or research experience

Physical Requirements:
Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination.
Involves extensive standing and walking.
Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
