The Cord Blood Collection Coordinator’s responsibility is to obtain informed consent from the donating mother, assist Obstetric MD/DO in collecting umbilical cord blood units (CBU) during final phase of labor, provide obstetrician with all materials needed for cord blood collection, obtain peripheral blood (PB) for infectious disease testing from the donating mother, accurately label the umbilical cord blood units (CBUs) after delivery from mothers choosing to donate to the public Cleveland Cord Blood Center.

A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00PM - 7:30AM, and work every other weekend.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Obtain informed full consent of mother; obtains maternal peripheral blood samples for infectious disease testing, obtains full maternal medical history and infant/delivery data, labels and prepares cord blood for courier transport to Cleveland Cord Blood Center with signed consent form and samples of mother’s blood.

Answers questions about public donation of cord blood.

Collect, document and report patient data and observations.  Implement care plans as directed by an RN and contribute to care plan revisions.  Administer medications and/or treatments authorized by a provider and observe patients for adverse reactions.    Perform routine laboratory tests. Educate patients and family members.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Graduate of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program Current Ohio licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

One year of patient care experience Experience initiating IVs or phlebotomy experience is strongly preferredExperience in OB or labor and delivery strongly preferred

Physical Requirements:

Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination.Involves extensive standing and walking.Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
