Position Overview: UCLA Lab School is seeking a creative, flexible, and dynamic long-term substitute teacher to lead ISTEAM classes (Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) for students in grades PK–6. This position involves guiding students through hands-on, inquiry-based projects that integrate science, math, art, and engineering practices. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with young learners, bring enthusiasm to exploring science and creativity, and be comfortable designing and delivering engaging lessons. You do not need to be an expert in all areas of ISTEAM—if you have expertise in science, engineering, art, wood working, or other creative project-based work, we encourage you to apply. Responsibilities: Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging ISTEAM lessons for PK–6 students. Cover a variety of topics, including but not limited to: California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS), California Common Core State Standards in Math (CA CCSS), project-based projects, and creative making. Integrate your own areas of expertise (e.g., woodworking, art-making, design, or other hands-on disciplines) to enrich the curriculum. Develop and organize lesson materials in advance of class sessions. Facilitate a safe, inclusive, and creative classroom environment where students are encouraged to explore, question, and problem-solve. Collaborate with and oversee one classroom teaching assistant to support student learning and classroom management. Assess student engagement and adapt lessons to meet different age levels and learning styles. Qualifications: Experience teaching or working with children PK–6. Spanish proficiency is highly desirable, but not required. Background in education, science, engineering, art, or related fields (formal teaching credential preferred but not required).
