The Idaho State Historical Society is a trusted guide through the state’s history and how it has shaped every aspect of our lives, our land, our communities, our government and our people. Created in 1881 and established as a state agency in 1907, the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) is an extraordinary system of cultural and historic resources comprised of the Idaho State Museum, Idaho State Archives, Idaho State Historic Preservation Office, Old Idaho Penitentiary and Historic Sites Program.
Summary
The primary focus of the Library Assistant 3 is providing reference services to Idaho State Archives (ISA) patrons, state agencies and Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) staff members. The Library Assistant 3 is responsible for staffing the reference desk, responding to research inquiries and providing public access to collections held at the Idaho State Archives. The incumbent will work with the Reference Archivist in maintaining a user-centered approach improving the research center services in ways that will make conducting historical research increasingly accessible and user-friendly.
Responsibilities
+ The Library Assistant 3 provides high-quality reference service and access to historical materials for both on-site and off-site researchers.
+ Will Staff the reference desk 10-15 hours per week between the hours of 11-4, Tuesday through Saturday.
+ Provides support on reference inquiries for the reference team.
+ Ensure that resources are accessible and correctly described and located; pull and re-shelve print materials, archival materials and oversize items.
+ Coordinate with Reference Archivist to ensure that reference center technologies are working properly.
+ Provide support to the Reference Archivist for donations of books, serials and maps.
+ Processes and catalogs Idaho state agency documents, vertical files, ID Docs, index entries, purchases and donations.
+ Serves as lead for updating indexes on shared drives and google drive.
+ Works with the Reference Archivist to identify library user needs and develop tools to improve ease of library use and research processes.
+ Provides support to promote active use of ISA collections through public programs, community partnerships, social media, exhibitions and other venues in coordination with the Reference Archivist.
+ Provides staffing support in the Reading Room in coordination with reference and collections teams.
+ Supports reference services by improving online finding aids on ArchivesSpace.
+ Works with Reference Archivist on collection development projects for the Research Center which may include maps and special collections material.
+ May serve on ISHS committees and projects as appropriate to the position.
Supervision
+ May supervise interns and volunteers
Other Responsibilities
+ Provides support to agency public programs and fundraising events as assigned.
+ Assists with technical aspects of public catalogs, Koha and ArchivesSpace, and government records database, Versatile.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience in at least two of the following areas:
+ Bibliographic search strategies are typically gained by approximately two years' library work experience such as copy cataloging, searching ordering, verifying bibliographic data and existence of items not on hand.
+ Library classification schemes and descriptive cataloging standards are typically gained by approximately two years' library work experience such as copy or original cataloging, assigning classification numbers (i.e. LC or Dewey.)
+ Using a variety of bibliographic sources and reference tools used in cataloging and acquisitions requirements are typically met by approximately two years' library work experience such as searching bibliographic databases (i.e. Books In Print, EBSCO, vendor files) or bibliographic utilities (i.e. WLN, RLIN, OCLC.)
+ Library organization, services, technical service practices and terminology requirements are typically gained by approximately two years' library work experience OR successful completion of two college level courses covering selection and review tools, library organization, and /or department functions.
Experience:
+ Coordinating, planning, and organizing library activities using computer applications software; training or instructing others in library practices and procedures- Typically gained by work experience developing or documenting procedures on library workflow, training others to perform library operational functions, or providing bibliographic instruction to patrons.
+ Compiling and analyzing information and writing reports or procedures in a library setting.-Typically this is met by work experience compiling and analyzing information and preparing a report. Include in your response what information you compiled and type of report you completed (i.e., statistical, narrative, procedural manual, etc.)
MQ Specialties
+ Experience conducting reference interviews to determine information needs-Typically gained by gained by at least 6 months of work experience conducting reference interviews to determine information needs
+ Experience providing reference services for historical and genealogical research, using special collections such as governmental records, manuscripts, photographs, and maps-This experience is typically gained by at least 6 months of work experience, or completion of a college internship, in a special collections library/archive or similar department within a larger facility; OR possession of an undergraduate degree in History, American Studies, or a similar subject.
