Your Role

The Legal Counsel is responsible for delivering a range of legal and regulatory services across Chubb Australia’s business, ensuring that its operations are conducted within the limits prescribed by law and that its rights are fully protected. A key focus of the Legal Counsel role is the provision of legal and drafting expertise in the development, review and improvement of Chubb’s policy wordings.

Your Responsibilities:

Reviewing, negotiating and drafting documents including insurance policy documents, various contract agreements relevant to the Company’s operations (such as distribution, broker, agency, sponsor, referral marketing, administration, service and confidentiality agreements) and marketing documents (such as scripts, brochures, welcome letters, advertisements). Analysing and providing legal and regulatory advice in connection with all aspects of the Company’s operations including business initiatives and transactions relating to insurance products, distribution methods and corporate agency arrangements, customer interface issues such as claims, complaints and disputes and internal advice to the company’s financial, actuarial, audit, human resources and risk department. Monitoring changes and developments in the legal and regulatory landscape impacting Chubb and assisting in the development of appropriate strategies to meet these developments, including appropriate communications and training for the business and liaising with industry and regulatory bodies. Assisting in the development and awareness of legal and compliance policies at a local level, including privacy related policy documentation and procedures, ensuring alignment with regional and global legal and compliance policies where applicable.Assisting in the development and maintenance of legal templates/precedent documents, legal policies and procedures. Assisting in the selection, retainer and effective management of external counsel.Working on other legal, regulatory, company secretarial and compliance matters as they arise from time to time.

 

Law degree with 3 to 5 years post qualification legal experience, preferably in insurance and/or commercial law in either private legal practice or a corporate organisation (preferably an insurance company or other financial institution). Front-end insurance experience will be highly regarded.Holds a current NSW Practising Certificate.Understanding of regulatory frameworks impacting the insurancy industry and/or financial services industry.Demonstrated effective, exceptional and proactive communication skills (oral and written), as well as analytical, presentation and facilitation skills. Knowledge of plain language writing, appreciation of grammar, and strong editing skills.Confidence in drafting and developing policy wordings and an interest in technical writing.Ability to provide commercially-focussed legal and regulatory advice.Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and adhere to deadlines.Well developed negotiation and interpersonal skills, and capable of dealing with all levels of Chubb personnel and external parties. Must have strong stakeholder engagement skills.Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, take initiative and refer and escalate matters appropriately.A positive attitude and high integrity.
