Role Summary We're looking for a Lead UX Engineer / Prototyper to join our UX team and drive the creation of cutting-edge, multi-modal user experiences for our vehicles. In this role, you'll be instrumental in shaping the future of our in-car and connected products by leading the development of high-fidelity prototypes that push the boundaries of what's possible. You'll work closely with design, engineering, and product teams, leveraging your expertise in both hardware and software to create compelling interactive automotive experiences. As a Lead UX Engineer on Rivian's UI/UX team, you will focus on creating innovative, user-centric interfaces and physical device interactions that enhance all areas of the experience in our all-electric vehicles, with a specific focus on hardware and software prototyping. You will conceptualize and develop engaging experiences for research, validation and presentation for new and novel ideas and experiences. Your work will help differentiate Rivian from traditional automakers by emphasizing a modern, connected experience that reflects our commitment to exploration and adventure. This is an on-site role at our design center in Palo Alto, CA. Responsibilities Lead the end-to-end prototyping process, from concept to functional demonstration, for multi-modal automotive user experiences (e.g., visual, haptic, auditory, voice, gesture). Collaborate with UX/UI designers, product managers, and engineers to translate design concepts and user flows into interactive prototypes for vehicle systems. Develop and implement prototypes using a range of tools and technologies, including interactive prototyping software, microcontrollers, and various sensors and actuators relevant to the automotive environment. Bridge the gap between design and engineering by demonstrating the feasibility and functionality of complex in-car interactions and emerging technologies. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our prototyping tools, techniques, and best practices within the automotive UX domain. Mentor and guide junior team members on prototyping methodologies and technical skills. Qualifications Application Requirement: Include a link to your portfolio, with credentials, showcasing samples that demonstrate your expertise for this role. 7+ years (Preferred) of experience in UX/UI prototyping and engineering, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work on interactive, multi-modal experiences, preferably within the automotive industry. Demonstrated expertise in interactive prototyping tools such as Figma and ProtoPie (including ProtoPie Connect). Proficiency in hardware prototyping, including experience with Arduino, microcontrollers (MCUs), and various sensors and actuators (e.g., LED control, motor control, haptic feedback) relevant to automotive applications. Demonstrated understanding of automotive communication protocols such as CAN and LIN, as well as other relevant protocols like I2C and UART. Strong programming skills in languages like C++/C and Python (especially in the context of hardware interaction and embedded systems). Preferred: Background in Industrial Design or a deep understanding of the automotive product design and development process. Experience working on in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), or other critical automotive UX systems. A "maker" mindset with a strong curiosity for new technologies and creative problem-solving in a fast-paced automotive environment. Ability to read and interpret PCB layouts and a foundational understanding of PCB design principles Experience with digital fabrication techniques, including 3D printing (experience with Fusion 360 or CATIA is a plus). Strong plus - experience with ID teams, wireless device communication, 3D printing, modelmaking, basic electronics skills. Pay Disclosure Salary Range Palo Alto-Based Applicants: $154,000 -$192,500 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, and other factors permitted by law).
