Lead Protective Intelligence Analyst
Overview: 

Conducts advanced threat assessments and investigations to mitigate real-world risks to the bank’s executives, facilities, operations, and reputation. Evaluates threats, disruptions, and geopolitical developments, delivering high-quality intelligence products to support executive protection, workplace violence prevention, and enterprise risk strategies. The analyst mentors junior team members and enhances analytical tradecraft.

Location: This role is based in Buffalo, NY. Open to considering candidates out of one M&T's main hubs within our footprint, but preference will be given to candidates based in Buffalo or who are willing to relocate.

Primary Responsibilities:Collect and analyze intelligence from various sources, with a focus on in-depth behavioral and contextual analysis of threats, suspicious activities, and external events (e.g., disruptions, geopolitical instability) impacting bank operations or reputation.Lead intelligence support for high-risk scenarios, including executive travel, major events, and crisis response, ensuring tailored risk mitigation strategies.Exchange intelligence with other organizations, information sharing groups, and industry groups to stay updated on the latest threats.Utilize advanced analytical techniques to comprehensively understand historical events and trends and recommend defense techniques to implement that protect the organization.Attribute observed activities to a specific threat actor or group based on known tactics, techniques, and procedures.Perform comprehensive and in-depth analysis of serious threats, providing detailed profiles and tactical responses.Engage with vendor for routine security products or solutions support.Identify opportunities for tuning and development of intelligence platforms' rules, alerts, and correlation logic to strengthen the security of the organization.Manage day-to-day operations of intelligence tools, ensuring they are calibrated and functioning as needed.Collaborate across Corporate Security organization and with key partners to ensure appropriate intelligence is received and shared.Contribute to the development of threat assessment frameworks, standard operating procedures, and escalation protocols.Build intelligence briefings of security threats, analysis, responses, and procedures and utilize to debrief peer teams and Corporate Security leadership.Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Design, implement, maintain, and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.Complete other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Partners with cross-functional security teams, and external stakeholders. 

Works independently within established guidelines, with outputs reviewed for strategic alignment and impact. 

Requires advanced knowledge of OSINT, threat assessment methodologies, and protective intelligence tradecraft.

Determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met. Work is accomplished with periodic check-ins for alignment and with limited direction.

Exercises judgement in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria in obtaining results. Exerts significant latitude in determining objective of assignment.  Work is accomplished with limited direction.

Advanced knowledge of Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), social monitoring tools, and advanced intelligence capabilities.

Manager Responsibilities:

No supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Intelligence Studies, Security Management, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience in protective intelligence, threat assessment, and/ or corporate security, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of  9 years’ higher education and/or relevant work experience. 

Expertise in behavioral threat indicators, protective intelligence tradecraft, and risk mitigation. 

Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills. 

Experience with tools, techniques, and methodologies for analyzing and mitigating real-world threats.

Education and Experience Preferred:

Advanced degree or industry-recognized certification (e.g., ATAP CTM, ASIS CPP). 

Experience in corporate security environments with cross-functional coordination. 

Advanced understanding of threat assessment methodologies and strategic intelligence production. 

Proven ability to brief senior leadership and manage high-pressure risk scenarios. 

Strong mentoring and team-building skills to develop analytical talent.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $110,635.01 - $184,391.68 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
